What Type Of Gun Should I Get As A Girl?

There are many challenges for women nowadays, and one of the most important steps we can take towards empowerment and independence is to arm ourselves and become proficient in self-defense. But where would you even start?

Well, here.

Things To Consider When Carrying a Handgun

One of the best things about being a woman is the chance to be feminine and creative. To have fun with trends, shapes, and colors, and to express yourself through your wardrobe. Some days I’m feeling greyscale, and some days I’m feeling flowery or even polka dot.

When it comes to gearing up for self-defense, however, women often run into practical issues such as where to place their weapon. The holster clip needs to be attached to a belt, otherwise it won’t be secure enough. And yes, you will need a holster. The cowboy move of placing a piping hot revolver into your pants doesn’t actually work in real life, spoiler alert.

the good bad ugly reholstering gun

Now you have a hard plasticky holster on your waist. Or maybe you have a soft holster, which would make it more comfortable against your skin, but might not be a great safety measure if your gun is locked and loaded, ready to fire.

You’ll still have the butt of the gun sticking out or pressed against your skin. The pressure of it against my back or my stomach for hours while I drive, for example, often leaves me with red bruises and painful marks. Yikes!

To be fair, you could always open carry. But you may not want to do that because you may become a target for someone who wants to try and steal your gun. There are plenty of crazy people out there, and if they have a gun on them, already drawn and ready to fire, you’ll be in for a tough time. It’s best, in my opinion, to keep your lightning stick to yourself, hidden from public sight, until it’s time to use it. Yes, I did just use those words.

So, if we consider open carry out of the equation, then we’re left with the issue of concealability, comfort, and cuteness all over again. I, personally, do not want to wear oversized sweaters for the rest of my life in order to carry.

Which Gun Should I Get?

When it comes to what gun to pick, many men, especially those who are tall with loose clothing, can get away with concealing larger caliber weapons. Women may not be so lucky, so my rule when it comes to picking your everyday gun is this: Pick the highest caliber gun that you can easily conceal.

A compact 9mm or a 380 tends to be a good choice for women. This is where, however, saving up and spending a little more will be in your best interest. The reason is that smaller guns absorb much of the impact of the shot into their smaller bodies and will recoil hard, making it very difficult to fire accurately, especially more than once.

A more expensive gun will be built with more stability. More reliability. And please do not buy a pink or neon gun, for obvious reasons. This isn’t Ultra, and you’re not going on a date with Marshmello.

gal gadot shooting

You’ll need to clean your gun every now and then, and you’ll need to practice with it fairly often. Keep in mind that add-ons such as lights, lasers, etc. may add to the bulkiness of the weapon. You’re carrying a heavy, metal, bulky thing attached to your jeans, and you need to ensure that you find a middle ground between being tactical and being practical.

For smaller guns, the compromising part tends to be the magazine capacity, so I tend to buy a bigger magazine because I can still conceal it and could use the additional rounds. The grip of the gun is also greatly improved by having an extended mag. If the grip around your hand feels too bulky, kindly request the store to show you different grips, thinner ones, for that same weapon. Yes, they can be changed very easily.

Safety Switch Options

I would also stick to something like a Glock, or a gun that has a safety switch to it. Because, well, you don’t want to shoot yourself in the leg, and because pistols (yes, please stick with a pistol, you’re not a cowboy and we’ve established that) that don’t have a safety button will come with a long trigger.

A long trigger means that this gun also has a safety feature, just a different one. With this one, however, you will have to pull the trigger all the way back, e v e r y t i m e, before firing each shot, which will hurt your finger, make you miss the target, and give you a slight nervous breakdown.

Just…stick to a simple safety pin option.

peggy carter shoots shield

You can always set up your weapon, with the safety off, to fire the first shot with a long trigger and the subsequent shots with a normal trigger pull. That would be a good setup to keep it on.

Take Movement into Consideration

We’ve talked about being mindful of shooting ourselves, so we need to address that little detail.

When you’re moving up and down, squatting to get the cat food on the lower shelf or jumping up (maybe climbing, depending on your height) to get that hair conditioner that’s finally on sale at the grocery store, your gun will be flopping around, with the risk of being exposed to strangers, which in many states and cases is actually against the law.

Not only that, but it will also be subject to pressure and movement which could trigger the firing of the projectile, and thus your next visit to the hospital and an awkward conversation with your parents.

zombieland girls

To avoid that, you should determine the risks related to movement and to the loading of the gun. If there won’t be much movement, my gun is locked, loaded with safety off, properly holstered, of course. If I will be moving around or have the gun on my hip, I will perhaps have the safety off but not have a round loaded. Or vice versa. A gun will fire the first round if it has been loaded prior to the safety being on, so be careful.

Maintaining your gun, cleaning it, and getting to know it are paramount to avoid accidents and misfirings. Become familiar with proper gun safety and ensure you’re following those rules at all times to keep yourself and others safe.

But, we still have the problem of carrying the gun on our hands. And now I’ll solve it for ya: The word is…HOLSTERS!

Holsters Are Like Shoes, You Need Different Ones for Different Outfits

Yes, the stores will sell you those basic waist holsters, but they can be obvious to onlookers if you’re wearing skinny jeans and, quite frankly, very uncomfortable. The waist is also a place of your body subject to a lot of movement and that can be unsafe if the gun is tightly packed in your jeans.

If you go on the internet, however, you will find a multitude of holsters. Bra, underarm, holsters that are also tank tops, belly bands, calf, thigh, and all sorts of different types.

Invest in those so that, no matter which outfit you choose, you can look confidently beautiful, safe, secure, and still be armed, without the need to “tuck it in” every two seconds, because that’s something we do if we’re not comfortable with the gun’s positioning, and it becomes obvious to everyone in the room that we’re carrying.

black widow ruins the moment

It’s very possible to be a woman, be fashionable, be safe, and be armed. Nobody really talks about holsters and how those can be good for you, but I know that we also want to wear that cute dress when summer comes without worrying about flashing your gun to strangers or staying unarmed against evil creepsters.

I have personally gotten to the point where I have a lot of fun pairing different holsters with different outfits, feeling tactical, and being what (between you and me) I like to call “cute as hell, deadly as f***.”

Closing Thoughts

I hope you can learn more about it and have fun too. Women can still be badasses and be in touch with their femininity. You don’t need a pink gun, what you need is what we always need in our wardrobes — options!

Lt. Beretta 40 cal is my holster gun, if I carry it. I usually carry a rifle, if anything. I have a 12 shot 22LR for critters and a 22MAG for bigger critters.

After the last set of surgeries, I decided the 30-ought-6 kicks too hard and I anticipate the kick too much. So, I’m loading magazines for the big guns.

Go to a dealer that has an indoor range and shoot everything he has over a period of time. If he knows you are sincere in purchasing a firearm, he or she should have no objections to you trying them out first. It is my opinion you never know what you will fall in love with, in this case.

Shot placement is important and you will need to practice every month to stay proficient with the firearm. The firearm you use should fit you like a glove & function without failures. Buying a firearm to protect yourself or your loved ones is committing to learn how to apply and judge when to use lethal force.

Good luck and I hope you find enjoyment in simple target practice. It is a tool that can be used for recreation as well as protection.

1. controls have to make sense to you
2. unless you plan on doing a lot of gunfighting do not obsess overly about magazine capacity
3. you must be able to get hits under stress, so using the pistol must become ingrained. practice!
4. get snap caps and dry fire the thing frequently, building operational familiarity and trigger skills
5. choke the absolute fuck out of the pistol. grip it until your hand quivers and then back off just until the quivering stops. dry firing builds grip strength.
6. practice safe storage; you MUST prevent visitors and children from accessing the pistol. This is easy to do; build awareness into your routine.
7. shooting is hella fun, challenge yourself to improve
8. decide mentally you have a right (nay, an obligation) to live and defend yourself and loved ones

Evie Magazine? Now a Cosmo type magazine is talking about guns for women? Please. Their target audience is Karen and no way, no how do I want anything that stupid near a gun. A cursory glance at the magazine had an article about which male was better in a relationship; dem or repub. Turns out the little feminists want conservative males. Who knew?
Also, do not advertise your weaponry online. As far as anyone via the internet is concerned… guns are bad and no one should own one…got that?

Ayup, all females in my family carry the Smitty EZ. Mixed bag between 380 and 9mm, however all use Hornady’s Critical Defense cartridges. One in the chamber, always.

Downside tends to be deactivating the grip safety. Just need to continue weekly range times.

How should a woman protect herself and loved ones?

By marrying a strong man, by raising strong sons, by marrying her daughters to strong men, by having a cohesive family and community, and by being in a white society.

Of course there are people (and jews) trying to destroy those possibilities, so from there on out, yeah, whatever the article says. Plus definitely conceal when not on your own land. And ignore the tough girl heroine with guns bullshit, that’s all hollywood.

Carry the biggest caliber you can handle with the most magazine capacity. 9mm is the optimum cal. with 115grn hollow points best according to Auntie’s trusted Marine NCO armorer buddy.

Ladies of Auntie’s acquaintance like to keep the heater in the purse and some others love the belly band under a blouse.

20 gauge for the home or vehicle with alternating slugs and buckshot.

Practice, practice, practice. And don not forget to dry fire with a snap cap please.

I’d say get a Ruger Speed Six, 2 3/4 inch barrel in .357 magnum. You can load it with .38 +P for a lighter recoil, but this one is great for smaller hands. I had to replace the small grips that came standard with it, with Pachmyr’s to help fill my hand.

A wheelgun is much better for a new gun owner, IMO.

All of the women in my family have opted for either the S&W or Ruger LCR lightweight hammerless revolvers. the best, if you can find one is the S&W 342. Their choices were based on the easy handling, easy to conceal, cartridge to suit the shooter and the ability to fire freely from a pocket or purse with no risk of jamming.

clayusmcret
clayusmcret
March 4, 2021 4:01 pm

A couple things. If going for sheer simplicity, get a 38 revolver. However, revolvers do not offer consistent accuracy.

Going with a smaller 9mm or 380 is a good idea, but test out the slide on whatever you’re choosing. Make sure you can work the action repeatedly (pull the slide to the rear and release a number of times). If you cannot do this, go back to the revolver. (Edited to add: my wife is an awesome shot but doesn’t like working the slide or reloading magazines. Since I may not be there when she needs to do one or the other, I would have recommended a revolver to match her desires.)

Finally, Glocks do not have a traditional safety. If you want a safety on the weapon, consider a Taurus PT 709 Slim (9mm) or Ruger LCP (380) or LC9 (9mm).

“However, revolvers do not offer consistent accuracy.”

Huh?

Revolvers are more accurate than most autos. If you can’t hit it with a revolver, it’s the shooter not the gun.

Now mastering the double action trigger is another matter…

That was pretty much a quote from a concealed carry instructor. The double action of a revolver is what makes it less accurate. My PT709 only has one double action shot and that is the first one. Same with the LC-9.

Another consideration is whether to have a round chambered or not. Much debate over that.

Personally I prefer a double action, decocked and round chambered. Can’t go off accidentally and all you have to do is point and pull the trigger. No safety to flip. Unless you are practicing regular keeping it simple is best.

The fucken one that goes bang when your booger hook hits the bang switch.

Seriously, look up Jade Struck, Alex Zedra, Lena Miculek, Jessie Duff, Ashley Rheuark or Candice Horner. Anyone of those women will prove that gun type is personal preference and women are just as capable of handling any type of firearm in any caliber up to .900 nitro. Holsters are always function over form.

This fucken broad is click-baiting women that likely have no idea about firearms and are worried about accessorizing a firearm as a priority over firearm function and handling lol.

Fucking Gucci gun fucker.

Any firearm that is an EDC must absolutely have a round chambered and be in battery. There are plenty of safeties that do not involve anything more than grip and trigger safeties and there are traditional switch safeties as well. It comes down to preference and training. Try racking that bitch when you draw and lose that half second to one second in reaction time. If you are afraid to carry with a round chambered then dont fucken carry. You will probably be a casualty.

There are a shit ton of holsters designed for women and a huge selection of location/ position/ figure forming options as well. I am mortified whenever I see articles like the one above focus on shit that is so far off-topic and misinforming.

3 to 4 inch compacts can be single or double stack and I prefer my XDs 9mm or the XDm for concealed. Your CC is only ever going to be the locked mag and 2 or 3 spares on your person. CC is about surprise and being able to break contact and not getting into a prolonged firefight for fuck’s sake.

I do love my pink fucken holster though. It brings out the black in my eyes. Accessorizing is perfectly fine. However, function over form always takes priority regarding concealed carry pistols.

Always use what you train with and are most comfortable with as having to pull you EDC and fire is absolutely reliant on your muscle memory training and not if your hidden holster matches your g-string and bra.

ZFG, out.

P.S. Some of them three gunner women are straight up scary efficient and outright all sexy as sexy gets. Get your gun on women.

Most SEAL operators use Glock weapons because of their unparalleled reliability.
They make the Model 42 in .380 which has a very light recoil and is quite compact.
Walther also makes arguably the most famous .380 ever, The PPK.
James Bond dispatched just about everybody he faced with one.
All that being said, arm yourself. That’s the important part.

Few men or women practice enough to use a pistol without thinking about every action while under duress.

I do, and my HK 45C is a cozy companion.

My 4’11”, 100 lb. wife doesn’t, but she always grins ear to ear shooting her Colt Cobra 38 Special in the woods, crouch-walking toward the target with every round.

I own a nice SIG P239 SA/DA with decocker bought back in the ’90’s. It replaced my G19.
Very accurate 9mm and one I’ll never give up. It was replaced by the P225A1 model which is a virtual copy of the P239 in form and function. If I was to recommend a modern hi-cap 9mm model it would be a CZ-75.

I bought Mrs. Ed an S&W Hammerless 5-round .38 revolver Many Moons Ago. A few years later, I got her an S&W .40 semi-auto with 14+1, which she loves to shoot, but when she’s out and about, the .38 is her go-to. She just prefers the Point-and-Click simplicity of it. As she’s said to me many times, she has no intention of getting in a firefight……
My standby for the last 37 years is a Colt .45….. She likes it, but it’s just too large for her hands to be comfortable, and won’t fit into her CC Purse……
She got her own AR-15 after shooting mine, which she loves to go plinkin’ with, but she doesn’t much care for my AR-10. She’s only capped off 1 10-round mag in the last five years with it…..

I was doing some double taps at the range. Had a squib first round and the second round slammed cleared the barrel. Barrel bulged but didn’t burst. Asked for a new barrel, to purchase.
