I started to watch The Harder They Fall. A black African western. It starts with this intro: “While the events depicted are fictional…These. People. Existed. Then…instead of the polished nickel sixguns that never existed in those days, the pimp was really got on, with a matched pair of gold plated shooters, in the black hands that proceeded to murder black parents at their very nice breakfast table in their way too nice rustic home in front of the young son – so some verisimilitude – who then had a cross carved into his forehead with a straightrazor (the better to id him in his later justice-seeking). It is a black copy of a Tarantino western that just doesn’t work…as an entertaining film, anyway.
“Movies” are commercials, too (especially to all the commercial catchers mitts out there). And whether depicting dominant social-cultural engineering, or subversive social-cultural engineering, they’re all subversive to the subvertable, which is to say the already subverted.
