About 1977 I was enrolled in the Aviation Mechanic program at Long Beach City College. It was a two year program by the end of which we’d be ready to take the FAA A&P license exam. About 30 guys started, maybe 20 finished, so for the duration we were together 5 days a week around 6 hours a day- we got to know each other pretty well.
Before the first year ended the Administration decided to accelerate the program by requiring summer school so that it wouldn’t take a full two years. Rather than apply the change to incoming classes they decided to change up our schedule with little warning.
I had a wedding planned for the summer and several other guys had plans as well. That change and a few other issues (relating to a couple of instructors) created an “us vs. them” scenario. There was a fair bit of tension between the class and the school.
Enter the debut of “Animal House”. We went to see it en masse as a class. It was a riot. It became instantly clear that our class was the Deltas and certain of our instructors were Wormer, Neidermeyer and “some of the other Hitler Youth”. That movie came to define our remaining time at school. It welded the class together. The camaraderie improved a hundred percent.
Every time it comes on I have to watch at least a bit of it. The memories are heartwarming.
BTW- I did get married and we took a one week honeymoon. I had to make up the time with a special report on a Bendix pressure carburetor used on WWII-era large radial engines.
A fellow classmate said he wasn’t going to do anything to make up his lost time. He didn’t and the school didn’t screw with him come graduation.
Good times.

I wound up at accellerated UPT pilot training at Moody AFB Jan 1970 that was 16 hours per day, 7 days per week trying to fill the need for Vietnam pilots. It was too much; you can’t learn crap when you are tired. The graduate schools (fighters, bombers, tankers, etc) said we were shit and the USAF cancelled the accelerated program after 6 classes.

I like the 50s rock and the 60-70s country a lot but todays “Hollywood” crap isn’t fit for a dog. The people running radio and TV today need to be sent to Siberia.
