Gavin Newsom on L.A. Rail Theft: ‘We Look Like a Third-world Country’
LOS ANGELES, California — Governor Gavin Newsom professed shock and outrage as he visited the site of mass looting of cargo trains in L.A. on Thursday, helping clean up debris and touting his recent plan to help law enforcement fight theft.

“I’m asking myself, what the hell is going on? We look like a third-world country,” Newsom said, before apologizing for using the word “gangs” to describe the attacks on the trains, stressing that he did not mean the word in a “pejorative” way.
As Breitbart News has reported, images and videos of torn boxes and packages were shared widely on social media last week as the country learned of the looting of cargo trains as the Union Pacific line slowed near L.A, providing a target to thieves in the absence of law enforcement.
Newsom joined workers in trying to clean up the mess, the latest in a series of media events where he has worked to clean graffiti and debris.

The Union Pacific rail line wrote to left-wing, George Soros-backed L.A. District Attorney George Gascón — whom Newsom endorsed — demanding better law enforcement and threatening to route trains elsewhere.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has done little about the theft, while claiming credit for having “saved Christmas.”
In a statement, Newsom touted his “Real Public Safety Plan,” which proposes $255 million in grants to law enforcement agencies. It does not reverse the cuts to law enforcement undertaken by many Democrat-run cities, including L.A., where Mayor Eric Garcetti cut police funding by up to $150 million in response to the Black Lives Matter riots in the summer of 2020. Newsom also promoted his programs aimed at cleaning up the state and assisting “local litter abatement efforts.”

Where is Union Pacific Railroad Police (yes, such a force exists) while all this is happening?
Let me tell you where: A few years back — maybe almost 20 now — I was walking late at night through the city, and in order to get where I was going I had to cross over some railroad tracks. Admittedly, not at a crosswalk, which was about a half-mile distant.
I’m almost over the tracks when I suddenly hear a voice say: “FREEZE” and one of those annoying pen lights shines in my face, coming from my right. So I stop, and out of nowhere comes a Union Pacific Railroad cop.
I couldn’t believe my eyes. Union Pacific has their own cops?
He asks me to show him my ID, which I did. Then he tells me to put my hands behind my back; I’m like, “What?”
“You’re being detained until my backup gets here,” he tells me, “for crossing the tracks illegally.” He zip-ties my hands. This would be a mistake for him later.
I have to admit, right around this time I’m starting to lose my shit. It had been a long night and alcoholic beverages had been imbibed. It didn’t help that this guy was an arrogant ass, who clearly had issues; he was saying stuff like, “so you guys think you can just come get on our tracks, maybe steal some stuff, huh? Well we’re gonna get you off the streets,” and, “where were you going in such a hurry? Did you do something?”
Finally his backup gets there, and he walks over and starts gloating about “caught another one!” the little prick. He motions me to go sit in the middle of the tracks — and that’s when I see them: 5 or 6 others, zip-tied, sitting quietly in the dark. I go over and sit with them.
“Man, what type of bullshit is this?” I asked one guy, a Mexican, who just shrugged. He was probably used to this, the thought occurred to me. There were a couple of women too, I noticed, and from the looks of them, if they’d seen better days there weren’t many. And I’m wearing a tie, slacks and patent leather shoes.
The two cops are still over at their car, probably talking about what they were going to do to each other later. But I had had enough.
I calmly reached down and slipped my feet and legs backwards as I raised my tied hands under them until my hands were in front of me. Then I stood up, turned and told the cops what I thought of them, and flipped them the bird as I ran away; behind me I hear a voice say, “STOP!” but I was already on the other side of the tracks and going downhill by then.
The story should end here.
A few weeks after this happened, I was again crossing the tracks — this time at the crosswalk, however. Suddenly, I’m tackled: “DUDE, WTF???” is my immediate response.
As I’m trying to get up, I hear his voice: “Thought you could get away from me, huh?” Are you kidding me?
This time, he puts proper cuffs on me and puts me in the back of his car, talking mad shit to me the whole time; I’m still stunned, not just by being open-field tackled on the crosswalk but that this guy did it. He takes me to jail, where he’s trying to fit in with the city cops and sheriffs, who just looked at him like the fool he was. Seriously, the real cops didn’t even believe there was a UP railroad police either. But he kept trying to be cool with them, and failing, and I couldn’t stop smiling even though I was in jail — charged with illegally crossing the tracks and evading a peace officer, both equally ridiculous.
I had to pay a fine and was out of jail in a couple of days. Standard stuff.
But you see, this is where Union Pacific’s railroad pigs are, and what they’re doing while Rome burns. Like the “manufactured men” Thoreau talked about, these guys truly are on the same level as horses and dogs.
Why am I not surprised by that story?
I did a couple of days in jail for fishing without a license once. I even had a license, it just didn’t have the endorsement checked off- they let me go when the Fish & Game Department opened up on Monday, but still…
When you have an authority hammer, every problem looks like a violating nail.

I met that same Union Pacific guy later on, after he got a position with the US Customs and Immigration Service staffing the Buffalo NY border crossing, where he unfortunately had actual federal law enforcement authority.
Between the sneers and the snarls, his overall message consisted of “what is scum like you doing at MY border crossing?”

The trash reminds me of my county roads except the trash is thrown from moving vehicles. I see a lot of dumped residential garbage as well like the 13 gal and 40 gal plastic garbage bags not to mention worn out tires, dead dogs etc. etc. It’s a “way of life” in these parts.

I worked several years for BNSF at its corporate headquarters in Fort Worth , Texas. Man, was I ever glad to land that job, an “exempt” job in Information Technology. Benefits, 401k, railroad retirement . that never happened . I was 40 years old when it “happened”, thank the Lord, first time in my life I worked for a company that actually “offered” something for the “future”. Of course I had paid my dues returning to college , with a family, and got “educated” in IT. This was around 1997, just before the Y2K stuff. I was NOT UNION and never had a UNION job in my life. Nothing “special” about me BTW!!! I liked working for BNSF despite the “owes me” attitudes of those that were UNION.
Exposing my identity , I among some 138 exempt BNDF IT employees were outsourced to IBM , uh, shortly after Y2K. I was very fortunate to have been an employee of IBM although not really happy about being outsourced. Still , another 13 years with IBM and doing the same IT work and at the same BNSF corporate location as before but as an employee of IBM. PRAISE the LORD!!! I’ve never asked the LORD to GIVE me anything, just saying , my boot straps were pulled up and how thankful I am regardless I did not get the BNSF cushion on a RailRoad retirement package. Anyway, my “kind” basically does not exist these days. People in the United States seem to be so terribly “owed”. It’s not about me, only how I was raised and like I’ve said in other posts on this site, THE WORLD OWES US NOTHING, Thank you!
