The Gender Divide is Global

“And the only sound that’s left after the ambulances go, is Cinderella sweeping up on Desolation Row…” – Bob Dylan

On Friday, January 26th, a columnist for The Financial Times named John Burn-Murdoch posted a chart showing that the much-discussed and growing ideological divide between young men and young women in America is manifesting in a similar way in countries around the world. Anyone who’s been half paying attention for, oh, a decade and a half (or more) could not have been the slightest bit surprised.

I suppose it’s the natural tendency (if not hard-wired instinct) of demographers to look upon surveys or data sets, and pontificate about them in a way that gives even self-evident findings an aura of being groundbreaking. But no amount of hyperbole can mask obliviousness to the obvious.

In the last month, Neil Howe has devoted a great deal of column space to this gender divide, most of it in response to Murdoch’s initial tweet. Long recognized as one of the world’s leading demographers thanks to his work on generations and as one of the authors of The Fourth Turning, Howe continues to carry a certain amount of clout when he dives into a subject to this extent. But the problem with making assertions on the basis of officially-reported data, of course, is that information can always be parsed to affirm whatever conclusion an expert wanted to make in the first place. And such is clearly the case here.

Unpacking all of the reasons young men and women have become so ideologically divided from one another would take all day. Suffice to say, the major factors which have contributed to the divide as it exists are all familiar: feminism, unchecked hypergamy, social media, social isolation, the transformation of education into an indoctrination factory, D.E.I.-mandated misandry in hiring and at work, the fallout from #metoo, and the different orientations men and women have toward the world to start with. But the fact that we’re seeing this gender divide across continents and cultures clearly suggests a deeper division stemming from something not confined to geography – almost certainly a combination of the influence of the pill, the Sexual Revolution, and the ascent of the modern welfare state and corporate technocracy, both of which are poisonous to gender relations and hostile to the family unit by their very nature.

Which brings me back to Neil Howe. Throughout their collaboration, Howe and William Strauss asserted that gender relations, like many other social dynamics, change with the cycle of history they identified. In fourth turning eras, they wrote, a civic crisis reliably pushes gender relations back to the conventional and gender roles back to the traditional. At the root of it all, they claim, is the imperative to survive: people feel free to experiment and live non-traditionally when times are good and a sense of fear, deprivation and uncertainty doesn’t consume their thoughts, and when the pendulum swings the other way, they behave differently. (Perhaps this is why the “weak men create hard times” line got mis-attributed to Strauss and Howe. But I digress.) Of course, anyone with common sense would pick up right away that this connection reads like a self-fulfilling prophecy: if the cycle of history determines human behavior, then the cycle of history is essentially the determinant of everything. And if that’s true, then anything happening in the real world can always be characterized to fit a settled, unchanging conception of how – and why – the world changes.

The changes which came to gender relations in the years in and around the Sixties were different in scope than any which ever came before. We are living, today, through the social, economic, cultural and political fallout of those changes, at the same time our social, economic, cultural and political structures are careening toward collapse. On some level, young men – millions upon millions of whom have been passed over by the professional and managerial class, maligned by woke culture, shut out of the dating scene, and kept in the shadows by the rise of technocratic tyranny -sense that what is happening today is leading toward something genuinely cataclysmic. They see the forces that have made their adult lives so much less fulfilling than their father’s and grandfathers’ as the problem, and they can’t be shamed for speaking their minds anymore. Meanwhile, the Establishment takes a break from the melodramas over Orange Hitler and Senile Joe by talking about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. If T-Swift finally found her love story (with a Pfizer spokesman!), maybe all the young liberal college-educated single women in the cities can dream, too.

https://www.demographyunplugged.com/p/more-on-the-widening-youth-gender?r=2bh1zm&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Howe devotes a great deal of space in his latest piece (out February 13th, in the link above) talking about the struggles of young women. Fair enough. But it’s a fine line between acknowledging trends as a demographer, and legitimizing certain trends borne of fear and group solidarity as rational but not others. However one feels about Andrew Tate, he didn’t achieve mass popularity with men under age 30 by accident. The fame and fandom accorded Greta Thunberg might have many origins; rationality is not one of them. Howe attempts to account for her rise with a drawn-out explanation about “emotional pain and political ‘catastrophizing.'” Does that sound believable to you?

The most astonishing conclusion Howe wants us to believe, is that this gender divide (along with all its attendant dysfunctions) reflects what invariably happens in fourth turnings somehow. It doesn’t. Moreover, he’s confident that as events darken and time horizons grow shorter, young men and women will ultimately assume complementary roles to meet the crisis in constructive fashion. That confidence is misplaced. What we are seeing between young men and women today a sign of an irrevocable breach decades in the making. The longer it continues, it will surely lead to a spiral of ever more dysfunctions…and ever greater loneliness, isolation, celibacy, resentment, anger, childlessness, hopelessness, and despair.

The chances that young men will turn more liberal as we proceed down this path as a civilization, are precisely zero percent. Will young women on the liberal end of the spectrum see the light, or will most of them resolutely stick by the outwardly reassuring-but thoroughly rotten bill of goods they’ve been sold? I think that question answers itself.

The gender divide is global, and it is not going away. In the dying stages of neoliberalism, the whole world is becoming something like Dylan’s “Desolation Row.”

In order to use generational theory as a guide to understand what’s happening today, the theory has to be put aside when reality turns out differently. Especially when the difference between the theory and reality augurs the very real possibility of a bleak future.

Because men are providers, think about the future, think about the safety of the women/their wives/their daughters, etc., value strength, etc….while women get distracted by “shiny things” (my wife’s phrase…seemed appropriate). A VERY GOOD TREND. Now if they will just STAY OUT OF THE WAY when the blowback happens, we might get some real improvement in things.

Actually, I think they need to stand directly in the front row when the blow back happens. These women who are most likely to align with the liberal agenda are HEAVILY shielded from the consequences of these bad policies.

Men are more likely to be conservative because if a man fucks up he only has his family to help him. If they do help him it’s with the expectation the help will be brief and he’ll pay them back. Liberal women always get bailed out from their piss poor decisions by the government and they learn nothing from it. There’s so many women who’d be trad wives in less than a year if you took away the government subsidized jobs (education, healthcare etc) and the single mother safety net. A lot of these women would snap out of it if natural consequences were allowed to happen.

The future belongs to those who show up for it.
It would seem the inventors of the modern world, and eveything wonderful in it (white people) have decided to stay home and not procreate.
Welcome to the new dark age.
7th century pedophile worshipers are fucking like rabbits.
And they will be the future because they are showing up for it.
The irony is, western “liberated” leftist women are brining about the subjugtation of their own as slaves for generations when the goat fuckers put them in burkhas.
Leftism and their half-wit women are immune to reality.

Exactly Mary , when shit gets real , people will either get real with it or they just wont make it thru . Right now so much of everything is an illusion conjured up like a sorcerers spell to make people believe its real , but that illusion can only be sustained when the power that it takes to generate it is there for the sorcerers use . They actually use the power they drain , like a parasite , from us to generate the illusion ( false narrative ) but as with all “draining “at some point when you don’t put something back in to what you are draining , well that thing becomes officially drained ,and there is no more to take .And so that’s when the facade comes down and thats when shit gets real again . I think ?Lol.

Women are directly fitted for acting as the nurses and teachers of our early childhood by the fact that they are themselves childish, frivolous and short-sighted; in a word, they are big children all their life long—a kind of intermediate stage between the child and the full-grown man,

Very good Stephanie, and its precisely why I disagree with Mr Finn . Of course its been my contention that if the powers that be can somehow keep all of these perverse incentives monetarilly propped up then this goes on ad nauseum and he is correct . But I have to believe , as I believe in math and physics and the particular way that our Creator designed our physical reality , with certain immutable characteristics , that this shit aint sustainable . A few years back I was thinking that AI and robotics etc could well be the thing that could enable the techno socialist state to be able to make good on its promises but now I think we are safe from that at least for a while . It just isn’t there yet . But even a socialist state that actually worked by way of the automation of everything required to sustain a population would still be a soul sucking proposition , perhaps even worse in ways that the vast majority of those living in such a matrix would never even know any better than to question .
We actually need some of the suffering that comes about as a result of these up and down cycles that the human race seems somehow incapable of not repeating ( we never learn , perhaps because the cycles take too long for a generation to pay enough attention to learn from ) because the bitter makes the sweet more satisfying . If you lived in paradise would you always think of it as paradise or eventually just where you live ?If you we’re extatically happy all the damn time it would just become your new baseline and you’d need more like a drug . Nah , we learn and develop our character from it all , screw the flatliners, the utopians , the ” conditioners its not an authentic human experience to live that way and eventually you’d find yourself ill equipped as a result of such a life .

While I agree with those deserving, my intention was that they get out of the way of those trying to do what is needed and not impeding them with their whiny drivel or misguided loyalties. Serious shit is coming, and folks who are unwilling to do what is needed, at least need to stay out of the way.

Found the Gen Xer. This “get out of the way, I’ll do it for you” attitude is exactly why we have so many coddled people who don’t know how to do anything.

Telling liberal women to get out of the way while others fix the problems they helped create is why we have so many arrogant, prideful, and narcissistic women (i.e. leftist feminazis). It’s time to let people fail, suffer, and figure out how to DIY. People don’t grow unless they’re allowed to struggle. Coddling women while they’re being elevated to the positions of power that put these bad policies in motion is a huge mistake.

If Strauss & Howe think that men & women will naturally align, then I agree with the author that they will not. This alignment sounds reasonable to men whose wives are already aligned with them, more or less, but such women are a distinct minority. It started decades ago with “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle”, but it really hasn’t relented. We can take false comfort in examples of women happily embracing traditional roles, but – again – they are the minority. The impulse to reproduce will cause some women – in their youth – to marry and stay home with kids…for a while, but once they have the kids they can start to resent their men – because that’s what the culture teaches them to do. “Eat, Pray, Love” sold over 10 million copies. The author is in her mid-50’s, alone and childless – just like she wanted to be.

Sadly, I can confirm this is true in my social circles. I’ve lost most of my female friends that I made in college. I can’t understand it either. The female friends I still have are from childhood or religious. The ones I lost were the female friends that were college graduates and they all became radicalized with leftist ideology (most didn’t care about politics 10 years ago) and still have extreme TDS. I also lost some of my college male friends who are under the same post-college indoctrination influence.

I recall a conversation my mother had with my younger sister in which my sister stated that gender is based upon how someone is raised, this is what her college professor taught her. My mother then asked if this professor has any children of her own, to which my sister replied in the negative. My mom said responded “I’ve had two boys and two girls and I can tell you there’s a difference.”

It’s impossible to have to a discussion with people who’ve rejected reason…but we must trudge on.

Been trying to tell the men on the Right for decades that the root of national, cultural and spiritual decay is the male/female divide. Specifically, the mass destruction wrought by feminism.

But nowadays, most of the Rightie and Christian men are Good Feminists themselves.

As the nations continue to deteriorate, hopefully men will rise up and restore their lands before all is destroyed.

What a weird mix of calling out demographers in general and Howe specifically,
with such great lines such as
“I suppose it’s the natural tendency (if not hard-wired instinct) of demographers to look upon surveys or data sets, and pontificate about them in a way that gives even self-evident findings an aura of being groundbreaking”

and then going overboard himself, on:
1. “The changes which came to gender relations in the years in and around the Sixties were different in scope than any which ever came before
Uh, wot? Ever heard about the roaring twenties, and it’s excesses in certain European big cities?
2. “Will young women on the liberal end of the spectrum see the light [and turn more conservative]?”
a) Either they will change somehow, or that group of women will go extinct.
b) Women, on average, don’t “see the light”, they follow the new route the herd is taking (along the deepest wisdom quip ‘What do women want? Women want things [and people] which have been pre-approved by their peers!’)
Just compare to how few feminists in the 1960’s got the majority of women to stop starting a family and having children.
