One of the rare times my dad told me anything @ WWII was when he saw a man back into a prop of a fighter on the USS Franklin and tore his arm off at the shoulder with just a little meat and skin under his armpit holding it on. Side note: My dad was in the plane, as a gunner, that was the last one to land on the burning Franklin before other planes were diverted.

Buddy of mine’s Dad was a side gunner who got shot down in the ETO and was captured by the Germans. Escaped to the Dutch underground, and was later recaptured, before his release.
Upon return to the U.S., he became a very successful father and businessman, prominent in many wide social circles of influence.
Anybody in WW-II that was in airplanes often, as were pilots and Airborne Infantry, as well as sailors at sea had more of a risk factor for their service and duty than others. Courageous men, who at the time, believed in the cause. I respect them. Not too many left, either
