Another computer cyber threat- Auto hacking:

“Though I hadn’t touched the dashboard, the vents in the Jeep Cherokee started blasting cold air at the maximum setting, chilling the sweat on my back through the in-seat climate control system,” Greenberg wrote. “Next the radio switched to the local hip hop station and began blaring Skee-lo at full volume. I spun the control knob left and hit the power button, to no avail. Then the windshield wipers turned on, and wiper fluid blurred the glass.

“As I tried to cope with all this, a picture of the two hackers performing these stunts appeared on the car’s digital display: Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, wearing their trademark track suits. A nice touch, I thought.”

The situation stopped being funny, however, when the two hackers cut the engine.

“Seriously, this is f—– dangerous. I need to move,” Greenberg said, pleading for the hackers to return power to the vehicle.”

“The complaints that flooded into Texas Auto Center that maddening, mystifying week were all pretty much the same: Customers’ cars had gone haywire. Horns started honking in the middle of the night, angering neighbors, waking babies. Then when morning finally came, the cars refused to start.

The staff suspected malfunctions in a new Internet device, installed behind dashboards of second-hand cars, that allowed the dealership to remind customers of overdue payments by taking remote control of some vehicle functions. But a check of the dealership’s computers suggested something more sinister at work: Texas Auto Center had been hacked.”

Fiat Chrysler Recalls 1.4M Vehicles After Jeep Hack

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCAU) recalled about 1.4 million vehicles in the U.S. to perform a software upgrade that was developed to thwart hackers.

The affected vehicles are equipped with 8.4-inch touchscreens and the automaker’s Uconnect infotainment system.

Owners will receive a USB drive that contains the update, which provides “additional security features,” Fiat Chrysler said Friday. When the Uconnect upgrade was first announced last week, Fiat Chrysler said customers could choose to have a dealer handle the installation.

The company also implemented network-level security measures on Thursday to prevent remote access to vehicle systems.

The recall includes the following models:

2013-2015 MY Dodge Viper specialty vehicles
2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups
2013-2015 Ram 3500, 4500, 5500 Chassis Cabs
2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Cherokee SUVs
2014-2015 Dodge Durango SUVs
2015 MY Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans
2015 Dodge Challenger sports coupes
