White House Caught Secretly Airlifting $1.7 Billion US Taxpayer Cash To Tehran To Ensure Iran Nuclear Accord Success

Tyler Durden's picture

What Donald Trump has proclaimed the worst deal ever made, may just have become worst-er. The shocking truth behind the US-Iran nuclear deal, as WSJ reports, is that John Kerry and the Obama Administration airlifted $1.7bn of cash in ‘compromise’ payments (read – bribe) to Tehran to ensure the release of 4 captured sailors coincidentally the same weekend as the signing of the nuclear deal.

With all the chatter of helicopter money as solution to the western world’s economic ills,The Wall Street Journal’s Jay Solomon and Carol Lee expose, it appears The Obama Administration is already busily dropping cash where ever it needs things done in a hurry…

Wooden pallets stacked with euros, Swiss francs and other currencies were flown into Iran on an unmarked cargo plane, according to these officials. The U.S. procured the money from the central banks of the Netherlands and Switzerland, they said.

The money represented the first installment of a $1.7 billion settlement the Obama administration reached with Iran to resolve a decades-old dispute over a failed arms deal signed just before the 1979 fall of Iran’s last monarch, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

The settlement, which resolved claims before an international tribunal in The Hague, also coincided with the formal implementation that same weekend of the landmark nuclear agreement reached between Tehran, the U.S. and other global powers the summer before.

“With the nuclear deal done, prisoners released, the time was right to resolve this dispute as well,” President Barack Obama said at the White House on Jan. 17—without disclosing the $400 million cash payment.

Of course, senior U.S. officials denied any link between the payment and the prisoner exchange. They say the way the various strands came together simultaneously was coincidental, not the result of any quid pro quo.

But U.S. officials also acknowledge that Iranian negotiators on the prisoner exchange said they wanted the cash to show they had gained something tangible.

Sen. Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas and a fierce foe of the Iran nuclear deal, accused President Barack Obama of paying “a $1.7 billion ransom to the ayatollahs for U.S. hostages.”

“This break with longstanding U.S. policy [not to] put a price on the head of Americans, and has led Iran to continue its illegal seizures” of Americans, he said.

Since the cash shipment, the intelligence arm of the Revolutionary Guard has arrested two more Iranian-Americans. Tehran has also detained dual-nationals from France, Canada and the U.K. in recent months.

Perhaps most ironically, the Iranians did not want US Dollars…

Iranian press reports have quoted senior Iranian defense officials describing the cash as a ransom payment. The Iranian foreign ministry didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The $400 million was paid in foreign currency because any transaction with Iran in U.S. dollars is illegal under U.S. law. Sanctions also complicate Tehran’s access to global banks

The Obama administration has refused to disclose how it paid any of the $1.7 billion, despite congressional queries, outside of saying that it wasn’t paid in dollars. Lawmakers have expressed concern that the cash would be used by Iran to fund regional allies, including the Assad regime in Syria and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, which the U.S. designates as a terrorist organization.

Mr. Kerry and the State and Treasury departments sought the cooperation of the Swiss and Dutch governments. Ultimately, the Obama administration transferred the equivalent of $400 million to their central banks. It was then converted into other currencies, stacked onto the wooden pallets and sent to Iran on board a cargo plane.

On the morning of Jan. 17, Iran released the four Americans: Three of them boarded a Swiss Air Force jet and flew off to Geneva, with the fourth returning to the U.S. on his own. In return, the U.S. freed seven Iranian citizens and dropped extradition requests for 14 others.

We leave it to Sen. James Lankford (R., Okla.) to conclude:

“President Obama’s…payment to Iran in January, which we now know will fund Iran’s military expansion, is an appalling example of executive branch governance,… Subsidizing Iran’s military is perhaps the worst use of taxpayer dollars ever by an American president.”

And now comes the big test of the mainstream media in America – can they stop discussing Trump and Khizr Kahn for long enough to question the deliberate obfuscation of facts in yet another foreign policy snafu by the administration?

LOL. The media failed their tests years ago. I find it strange that someone would actually still think the media is anything other than a propaganda mouthpiece that spews disinformation directed by TPTB. There is no way this will be a news story that gets any traction what so ever.

While the country weeps and gnashes its teeth every 9/11 the “media” never reports or talks about WTC # 7 or the billons of dollars (some reports a trillion) that went “missing”. As all air traffic was grounded Bin Landens family members were granted clearance to leave the country following the “terror event”.

The whole thing at this point is almost laughable if it weren’t so sad and corrupt.

We have a de facto state-run media in the United States. We’re no better than nations with a de jure state-run media and, in some respects, worse, as it has the veneer of being “free” yet is anything but. The takeover was completed at the federal level in 2008.

Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again” might as well be synonymous with “Take America Back Again.” You might balk at his demeanor, but let’s get one thing straight: if you’re one of those folks who thinks Trump is cut from the same cloth as Clinton, you’ve been duped. If you’re one of the cynics who claims things won’t change, you’ve been duped. If you’re a critic who says Trump supporters are being duped, guess what, you’ve been duped. Unless your name is Jeb or Mitt, quit the nonsense of supporting Gary Johnson or a write-in candidate. If you don’t vote for Trump, you have ZERO right to complain if Hillary is elected because your attitude is responsible for her. Barring sudden death, either Hillary or Trump will be the next president. This is not 1968. Deal with it. If you’re “not with him” then “you’re with her.”

Fuck them both. They both suck banker jizz and will gladly suck all the banker jizz they can lay their pie holes on. Trump doesn’t give a damn about you and Clinton doesn’t give a damn about you. We are on our own.

Well at least I’m on my own – you can lay all the stock on a daddy or a mama that cares nothing for you if you want.

Of course Clinton and Trump, to use your sentiment, “don’t give a damn about us.” I don’t give a damn about them personally either. What I care about is one of these two people will lead the beastly bureaucracy known as the United States government. The system that exists, flawed as it is, better serves our interests under Trump than under Clinton.

This is not the election to fix everything that’s wrong; it’s an opportunity to stop another mad conductor from furthering the derailment and getting the train back on the tracks. Your “fuck them both” attitude is a “fuck you” to everyone else if she gets elected. Go ahead and spend the next four years on alternative internet news sites complaining about Hillary and proudly telling yourself it’s not your fault because YOU didn’t vote for her. That’ll certainly stop WWIII.

Good lord, I almost puked on myself. Remarkably I seldom comment on politics because I figure everyone’s asshole is brown and smells like shit. Mr. Angelo, the system is designed to not serve you in the least. Mr. Trump in all of his non-political correctness will do nothing to maintain the status quo nor fix it.

I’m no Hillary fan by any means and I’m sure we can both agree on a multitude of reasons why she’d be a bad POTUS. Likewise let me abundantly clear on this when it concerns Trump, lack of specifics, red hats, and shit talk does not to me equate honesty and a command of the issues. In fact Trump’s ignorance and narcissism is quite frightening but I’ll leave it at disgusting. The man is a douche and Hillary is a douche.

Mr. Angelo,

We are just going have to agree to disagree. I appreciate your passion and you are welcome to your vote. I wish you the best in all of your endeavors and I’m sure you’ll wish me to go to hell. I’m not going to vote for either of the scum bags in question and I guess I’ll just have to mentally masturbate and complain on alternative internet news sites for the next 4 years.

JA,
I agree w/ your assessment that the media is “state-run” and is de jure, FCC and are controlled by six corps., etc.
But, I’d also say it is de facto corporatism, a hybrid fascism.
Always has been.

Nevertheless, there is something beyond “being with him or being with her”.

There is ME.

Consequences be what they may.
You read like most statists; as though all are compelled to abide by the “our”, “we” “us” (fill in the collective appropriate pronoun(s)) of guilt and compliance, viz. “I told ya so …” dribble.

Fuck your notion of “zero right to complain”.
I’ll go on my merry way, and you are quite free to do as you wish as well.
But I ain’t in “the club”.

And I hate to break it to you, but, you ain’t either.

Maybe, you are the one who’s been duped.

When it comes to beliefs about particular issues, I don’t doubt I’d find much in common with either “Ticky Toc” or “Grog.”

That said, neither has the testicular fortitude to budge a pair of loose fitting silk boxers with their limp dick erections. I have news for you fellas, your mothers weren’t the first femme fatales your fathers found fitting to fuck, but neither of your candy asses would exist if daddy dearest held out for the “it” girl of his day because that bitch doesn’t exist.

“Ticky Tok” and “Grog,” useful idiots both, are no better than the “I’m with her” crowd because the media has gotten them to take their ball (apparently the only one they have) and go home, sitting this election out. They won’t directly vote for Hillary because there’s apparently enough blood not going to their pencil peckers to power their brain. However, they’re just as bought by the media and indirectly support her with their “I’m on my own” and “there is ME” mentality. That’ll go over splendidly when they die in a shootout with government agents making their last sovereign stand over the absolution of their once treasured rights.

You come across about as smart as a day old cat turd that has been sitting in the sun all day.

So let me see if I have all the facts straight because you are hard to keep up with and currently most of my blood is powering an erection in my silk boxers while contemplating mother fucking. I’m somehow a bad american and unpatriotic because I refuse to vote for an imbecile that comes across as a functioning retard. By not voting for said imbecile I’m in de facto voting for a known corrupt liar.

Go fuck yourself dickwad.

I don’t use terms like “bad American” and “unpatriotic.” They’re loaded neo-con terms that regimes use to cajole the unsuspecting masses to go along with wars and policies the people otherwise wouldn’t support. Which is exactly what you’ll be advocating by staying home and electing Hillary.

I’m not advocating any such thing. It’s the zombie followers like you that scares the beejezus out of me. There is no room in your myopic views for any action or non-action that runs contrary to your wants / fears / needs.

You mentioned above about liberties and treasured rights, well I hold the liberty to not support the lesser of 2 evils because in the end it’s still evil.

I could care less who wins, as I said before they both suck donkey balls. In the interest of your well being and future enlightenment I hope your man Trump wins. I honestly hope so for your sake because it is very important to me as a human being for you to be happy. When the Donald surely disappoints you and is the utter failure that I’m sure he’ll be I want you to learn one thing – he didn’t care for you after all, none of them do.

You make the same old tired argument that I must vote for a Republican or a Democrat. It is this argument and attitude that helps the elites maintain control of the political system. Requiring $1B+ to win an election in order to pay for your campaign costs and media coverage as well as following arcane party and cross-party rules which exclude all but the Rep and Dem candidates from national debates, the elites control the entire process using big money donations, aka bribes. Did you ever wonder why the elites and corporations donate to both parties? Donald Trump has stated to the press that this is what you do when running a business – in essence, you grease the skids.

I’m not telling you or anyone else who to vote for. But please don’t denigrate someone who chooses to vote outside the rigged two party system. If more people did it, we would no longer be saddled with the current rigged system.

Oh, and finally, regarding having zero right to complain if Hillary is elected. FUCK YOU! As long as I am forced at the point of a gun to pay taxes to a government I didn’t elect and don’t support, I have every right to complain as much as anyone else. Even more so than nearly a majority of voters in this country who pay no taxes and/or on the government dole.

Thanks for posting this – $1.7 billion in cash from U.S. to Iran?! Fuckin marvelous!
I hope they use it to start funding anti-U.S. terrorism like the U.S. has been lying about for decades, or start a nuclear weapons program like the U.S. has been lying about for decades.
Instead they’ll probably spend it on something stupid like public health or education.
