Metallica’s new song is their ballsiest in decades
The metal-heads who thought Metallica had turned into tired old wussies should sit down and shut up for three minutes, because the quartet is back with a new song that ranks as its best work in decades.
On Thursday, Metallica teased its upcoming 11th album, “Hardwired . . . to Self-Destruct” (out Nov. 18), with the ferociously heavy track “Hardwired.” It’s a no-frills rager that addresses the seemingly perilous state of the world without mincing any words.
“We’re so f - - ked/S - - t out of luck,” growls singer James Hetfield with a palpable misanthropy, while Lars Ulrich’s gunshot drums capture him in the kind of form that few thought he still had in him. It’s the righteous blast of fury we didn’t know we needed . . . until now.
Although Metallica conquered the rock world with albums like the self-titled “black album” in 1991, the 21st century has been a leaner time for the California legends. Their stripped-down 2003 album “St. Anger” was poorly received, and while 2008’s “Death Magnetic” felt like an improvement, 2011’s “Lulu” — an experimental collaboration with Lou Reed — garnered some of the worst reviews of their entire career.
Sounds like they’re about to stop the rock rot.
Will the album be brickwalled? I’ll pass then, thanks. Their previous albums were not only poor efforts, but the mix did no favors either, and made it unlistenable. We’ll see.

You made my day. I had kind of written them off in recent years. Stuck listening to the Black and Justice albums. At least they are back to help write more of the soundtrack to this 4th turning. That song pretty much sums up 2016 reality.
cheers

It’s about time they pulled their heads out of their asses.
IMO that is not music; perhaps a new category should be created for Banshee and Rap.
kokada
Not banshee just awesome. You will like this one even more
from your new favourite band slipknot
MEDIOCRE!!!
I was a Metallica fan in the 80’s and through the “Black album.”
It went downhill after that. This song sounds like something they would have discarded in the late 80’s. Meh.
Here’s something that rocks – much better:
KMFDM
Love KMFDM, thanks Persnickety.
No solo? pfft
Come on…this is a much better song.
I guess they can’t be sued for sampling their own shit.
The sound of this song is the best they’ve had since Justice and before they turned into media whores. Who knows, maybe Lars will finally stop wearing his faggy scarf. And yes, I’m still bitter about the sellout black album and the fact that they turned into a dad-rock band instead of leading thrash into the next century.
