Trump: “We’ll Be Talking About Gun Laws As Time Goes By”

Tyler Durden's picture

In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in American history, the Left has predictably ramped up their calls for stricter gun laws with everyone from Chuck Schumer to Lena Dunham suddenly voicing their ‘expertise’ on the topic.

And while Trump enjoyed strong support from the NRA throughout the 2016 campaigning season, he offered a glimmer of hope to gun control advocates this morning saying “we’ll be talking about gun laws as time goes by.”  Per the Washington Examiner:

“We’ll talk about that later,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked about gun reform Tuesday morning.

“We have a tragedy. We’re going to do — and what happened in Las Vegas, it’s in many ways a miracle. The police department has done such an incredible job and we’ll be talking about gun laws as time goes by,” Trump said as he departed for Puerto Rico. “But I do have to say how quickly the police department was able to get in was really very much of a miracle. They’ve done an amazing job.”

Of course, it’s unclear whether Trump’s non-committal response was a sign that the mass shooting in Vegas has swayed his view on gun laws or if it was just a simplistic way to avoid another political firestorm on his way to Puerto Rico.

As Axios points out this morning, Steve Bannon, for one, seems fairly sure that it’s simply not politically viable for Trump to change his position on gun control saying it would almost certainly result in a 2020 loss.

“Impossible: will be the end of everything,” Bannon told Axios’ Jonathan Swan, regarding the prospect of Trump pushing for stricter gun control.

Bannon, who recently left his post as chief strategist at the White House and returned to Breitbart News, argued that a shift in Trump’s second amendment stance would have a devastating impact on his support from his base. The move would generate a “worse” reaction from his base than a move to support an amnesty immigration bill, Bannon said.

Certainly Trump’s comments made in a speech to the NRA earlier this year, in which he vowed “you came through for me, and I am going to come through for you,” would seem to support Bannon’s view that a reversal on gun control would be ill-received, to say the least.  Here is a portion of Trump’s speech transcript courtesy of Newsweek:

But you came through for me, and I am going to come through for you.  I was proud to receive the NRA’s earliest endorsement in the history of the organization.  And today, I am also proud to be the first sitting President to address the NRA Leadership Forum since our wonderful Ronald Reagan in 1983.  And I want to thank each and every one of you not only for your help electing true friends of the Second Amendment, but for everything you do to defend our flag and our freedom.

With your activism, you helped to safeguard the freedoms of our soldiers who have bled and died for us on the battlefields.  And I know we have many veterans in the audience today, and we want to give them a big, big beautiful round of applause.

But we have news that you’ve been waiting for for a long time:  The eight-year assault on your Second Amendment freedoms has come to a crashing end.  You have a true friend and champion in the White House.  No longer will federal agencies be coming after law-abiding gun owners.  No longer will the government be trying to undermine your rights and your freedoms as Americans.  Instead, we will work with you, by your side.  We will work with the NRA to promote responsible gun ownership, to protect our wonderful hunters and their access to the very beautiful outdoors.  You met my son—I can tell you, both sons, they love the outdoors.  Frankly, I think they love the outdoors more than they love, by a long shot, Fifth Avenue.  But that’s okay.  And we want to ensure you of the sacred right of self-defense for all of our citizens.

All that said, the devastating pictures of the Vegas massacre that will undoubtedly flood the media in the weeks to come could prove to be too much political pressure for the Trump administration to ignore.  As some GOP sources have suggested, one solution that Trump could pursue might be a deal in which he opposes an NRA bill designed to relax restrictions on silencers while avoiding talk of a more comprehensive gun control bill.

People he talks to haven’t heard old views surfacing: “In the past Donald was very pro-gun control on automatic rifles, but I doubt he’s going to make an issue out of it this time and pick a fight with the NRA,” said a New York-based conservative operative who has advised Trump. “Perhaps down the road.”

Yes, but: Almost everybody we spoke to hesitated when predicting Trump’s next move on guns. Some mentioned his taste for bipartisan deal-making, and one source who has worked closely with Trump thought a deal with the Democrats on guns wasn’t out of the question — especially as an emotional reaction to the carnage.

“On top of the immense political pressure, the visuals Trump will see, hundreds of severely injured young people, could provoke him to act,” this source said. “The rational route to take would be to let the investigation play out to see if any new laws could’ve prevented this. I’m 100 percent Second Amendment but … people who had their brains blown out is enough to make anyone with a heart consider anything to prevent this.”

One possible path: Trump could make a modest concession to gun control advocates by opposing a controversial bill, backed by the NRA, to relax restrictions on the purchasing of gun silencers. Politico reported, citing GOP sources, that the bill “won’t be reaching the House floor anytime soon after a horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas.”

Trump could get out in front of it, get a slap from the NRA on an issue that’s not nearly so radioactive as gun ownership, and move on without considering more substantial gun control actions.

So, what say you…is Trump just buying time until the media pivots back to the “Russian collusion” narrative or is the NRA about to get blindsided?

I heard an interesting fact recently. This massacre in LV was NOT the largest mass slaughter of innocents in u.s. history. That would be Wounded Knee-where the gov’t slaughtered between 150-300 innocents. Bet we don’t hear that fact on the ‘news’.

So, what say you…is Trump just buying time until the media pivots back to the “Russian collusion” narrative or is the NRA about to get blindsided?

Neither.

Trump couldn’t care less (by now) about the Russia collusion narrative as the failure by the intelligence and spy agencies and resources of the world’s mightiest country to find conclusive and irrefutable evidence of such collusion should indicate the collusion never even existed.

Trump is likewise at least somewhat aware that his victory in November was substantially based on the support he received from Americans who support the Second Amendment and whose virulent opposition to Hillary Clinton was founded in part due to her repeated statements on confronting/standing up to gun manufacturers, the “gun lobby” (read: NRA), and her direct admission that she would consider the ban on firearms that the government of Australia implemented.

Even with Stephen Bannon outside the White House, Trump knows by now that the conservative voters who are fiercely protective of their Second Amendment rights would be livid if Trump turned against them on this issue, all the more since he received the NRA’s endorsement and spoke at NRA functions. A betrayal of the firearms ownership community would guarantee defeat in 2020 perhaps even more than a full-blown amnesty towards DACA recipients would.

I believe Trump was simply giving a cosmetic answer en route to Puerto Rico. He did, moreover, appoint Neil Gorsuch, a textualist judge who is conservative and who has given every indication of defending the Second Amendment.

Having said all that, let’s wait and see.

They’re going to zero in and outlaw bump stocks. And they should. That silencer bill was never going anywhere, nobody with a brain supported it anyway.

Not that I care, but one doesn’t need a “bump stock” to bump fire. It just takes a wee bit … just a wee bit (not much) of practice.

If you don’t want a bump stock then please don’t purchase one. I will not ask my Congressman to enforce a law requiring you to own one, and I sure as hell won’t obey any law requiring me to surrender the two I already own. There was no maniac on the 32nd floor, it was as false flag as the Gulf of Tonkin and 911. Anyone with a brain would know that; couldn’t resist. thanks PS: I lost a hellofalot of my hearing due to military service and a suppressor has great benefits for me to preserve what little hearing I have left. Furthermore if someone wants you dead a suppressor/silencer will not save you.

There aren’t going to be any more anti-gun laws. If Trump tries to push this shit, he is finished.

SHARE Act is dead, silencers (mufflers) will stay under the NFA and conceal carry reciprocity is dead.

This isnt the first time Hillary, Obama, Schumer, Durbin etc have been able to claim victory a top a pile of innocent corpses and it wont be the last.

Bump stocks will probably be outlawed (i think they are dumb personally bc they waste ammo) but the same results can be had without them and some practice. This will be done to give sacrifice to those that demand the AR-15 be banned.
The more liberal and middle of the road states will surely ban something so the political scum can claim they “did something”, maybe “large” mags or put limits on ammo purchases.

Us normies will wonder why silencers, conceal carry, bump stocks, standard capacity mags etc… are endlessly demonized by the same people who literally fight against limiting muslim immigration at every step.

My QOTD:
Which has killed more Americans in the last 80 years (since the NFA was passed), guns with silencers or mooselimbs goatfuckers?

Not so sure SHARE ACT and nationwide concealed reciprocity are dead. You may be right, but I think even this event won’t dissuade pro-2A people in Congress.

Yet, we’ll have to see.

Id like to hope youre right but im not optimistic.
Reciprocity might have a chance to still get thru but silencers will remain on NFA will all their red tape and long waits.

Im a fan of them but they are niche, its not a hill any congressmen are willing to die on, as opposed to another assault weapon ban that would actually be fought.
Either way, the marxists won this battle, the talks are almost entirely about “gun control.” If the shooter was a musloid, the rally cry would be to “not judge a religion by a few bad apples” and “dont be islamophobic.” But because he’s an old white guy, it’s ban guns and ban their mufflers that werent even used in the shooting.

Im usually good about assuming stupidity instead of malice but after this shit and the guy on Tucker last nite, they arent misinformed, they are pure evil.

The whole aim here, is to outlaw personal weapons.
I don’t believe for a second this guy acted alone. Too surreal.
We are being painted into a corner, and provoked to that tipping point.
The powers that be are planning for the breakdown, and if they reach the point that they can’t perpetrate this ridiculously bankrupt system anymore with their financial gimmicks, the last thing they want is an armed populace.
We all need to stand our ground; shits on the way.

Trump seems to be turning into an enigma. I hope it is not like that old WHO song. We won’t get fooled again. One of the lines went “Meet the new boss.Same as the old Boss”

The really sad part is that the article even has to ask — “what will Trump do?”

Sad — because we THOUGHT we knew what he stood for. His strong pro 2nd amendment stance helped get him elected.

Now we wonder what he will do? And I continue to wonder why I voted for him.

Stucky….quite a few items besides gun control are still up in the air, including the EPA CO2 Endangerment Finding (the Paris Agreement was nothing compared to this).

Let’s have some patience.

Yep, that said im still grateful that hillary isnt there, we wouldnt be talking about the banning of bumpfire stocks and not getting silencers deregulated, we’d be talking about semiauto firearms being banned via Executive Order.

If it plays out with the above items it will resemble a draw but if he gives actual ground and “makes a deal” like banning of large (standard cap) mags, redone AWB etc… he may not even make it to the next election bc many that still make excuses for him wont be willing to and he’ll end up impeached (legit or bullshit, wont matter).

Admin nailed it. Six reasons to vote for Trump.
1. He is not Hillary Clinton.
2. He supports 2A.
3. He wants to build the Wall.
4. No amnesty for illegals.
5. No Mohammedan immigrants.
6. Stop the wars no new wars.

One out of six ain’t bad.

Bump stocks are a novelty, you can bumpfire any semi auto rifle by putting your finger on the trigger and your thumb in your belt loop. Accuracy isn’t worth a crap! It only works on a target that can be sprayed, hence Las Vegas out door concerts will no longer be!

I find it hard Trump will go against the NRA and the 2A. His son, Don, is an avid hunter. Even hunts wild game, like in Africa. And his son, Eric, also hunts. Although, I’m sure Ivanka would probably support some limit on the 2A. But hopefully, he won’t listen to her. He needs to kick her out of the White House. She’s too liberal.
