Millennials Are Delaying Marriage Because Men Aren’t Earning Enough

Tyler Durden's picture

Economists and social scientists have gathered multitudes of data about Millennials’ tendency to delay the traditional milestones of maturity (starting a career, getting married, buying a home, having kids) in favor of a prolonged adolescence.

But in a new study examining household formation patterns in the US, Pew Research Center has isolated the biggest factor behind the rise in those households without a partner or spouse: “The declining ability of men to earn a salary large enough to sustain a family.”

That’s right. As wages for female workers have risen in recent years, wages for their male peers have stagnated. This in turn has weighed on the household formation rate, because men are more reluctant to marry and start families unless they’re earning above a threshold, which Pew identified as $40,000, the Hill reported.

Instead, analysts said, the decline in both marriage and partnerships “All signs point to the growing fragility of the male wage earner,” said Cheryl Russell, a demographer and editorial director at the New Strategist Press. “The demographic segments most likely to be living without a partner are the ones in which men are struggling the most — young adults, the less educated, Hispanics, and blacks.”

“The point at which the average young man becomes ‘marriageable’ appears to be earnings of $40,000 a year or more,” Russell said.

Furthermore, in a sign that divorces haven’t been responsible for the surge in single Americans, Pew says the divorce rate has been stable, or even declining, since the 1980s

Russell pointed to data that shows marriage rates increase for younger Americans in connection with salaries. Fewer than half of men between the ages of 30 and 34 who earn less than $40,000 a year are married. More than half of those who make more than $40,000 a year are married, including two-thirds of those who make between $75,000 and $100,000 a year.

The number of Americas living alone has risen since the financial crisis as the global economy has struggled to return to pre-crisis growth rates. All told, the number of Americans living without a spouse or partner has climbed to 42%, up from 39% in 2007, according to the Pew’s analysis of US Census Bureau figures. For those under the age of 35 years old, 61% live without a spouse or partner, up 5 percentage points from a decade ago.

The higher number of spouseless households comes as the marriage rate declines precipitously. Just half of American adults are married, down from 72% in 1960.

The average American woman gets married just after her 27th birthday, while the average man waits until he is 29.5 years old to marry — significantly higher than the median ages half a century ago.

Lower household formation can ultimately drag on population growth as couples delay having children, and more couples forgo parenting altogether. Given Japan’s decades long struggle with stagflation, and its looming demographic crunch, maybe the Federal Reserve could kill two birds with one stone and start handing out helicopter money to men.

Wow anyone surprised by this sort of demographic figure compilation , please go back to sleep !
Industries that paid and trained men to build , operate and produce at High living wages that made them secure enough to support a family were wiped out by the ever present circle jerk . Wall Street to K-Street to Capitol Street , this insider jerk off session destroyed the middle class family man wage earner and the tax base so much depended on . Public employees at least maintained ground or lost minimal compared to the devastation all around . Where do you think the money was confiscated from to pay police , fire and teachers and a host of other government workers and contractors .
The powers that be from Washington DC to corporate America lined their collective pockets and borrowing to infinety . Anyone confused or still delusional as to who what why and where either profited from this orginized theft or are to stupid to entertain a conversation regarding the subject !
Many buy the narritive of “they just don’t want to work or hustle” and in a handful of cases that may be true but not 100 MILLON plus and growing . I saw this shift taking place 40 years ago as skilled people were thrown overboard systematically and steadily . Then came the series of final blows , legacy costs are to expensive to maintain . Translation : the circle jerk club will now cheat you out of your pension , medical benefits and social security funds ! Wow they got it , they got it all and the stock market is at record highs tetering on a mountain of debt . Remember the pension funds for all the government employees , they are all nearly bankrupt . Don’t fret Mr and Mrs Middle Class Home owner , what ever you own or have managed to save at 0.25% intrest the circle jerk recently declared all of it an untapped resource of revenue . So pack your shit because the badge wearing just doing my job minions are coming to confiscate everything in a neighborhood near you

Do you know any in real life? I don’t. It’s a made-up thing for purposes of the culture wars – literally marxist subversion, if you’re willing to call things by their real names.

MTF transsexuals exist, but are extremely rare. The media focus is BS.

Also let us not forget what it costs in hospital fees to bring a child into this world.Let alone raise one. Most young couples that I know put off having babies because of this. All the while the taxes and overly expensive health care costs are helping to pay for all the subhuman mud people to have babies with reckless abandon. Why should they worry when the welfare state(the ones who pay the taxes and cant’ afford kids) picks up the tab for everything. Then when ever they have a natural disaster or just going back to school for that matter. The taxpayers are made to feel bad if we don’t give to the poor downtrodden. It makes me F ing sick.

Just as bad money chases out good money, bad people having shit tons of ignorant kids will chase out all the good people who would have kids.

There was a time in this country when all you needed to support yourself was a strong back and a weak mind with the desire to do it.

Actually, you still can.

Something the illegals prove on a daily basis.

Maybe times haven’t really changed, but people have.

IMO this article is a misdirection. The real reason younger people aren’t getting married is because the media and Hollywood tell them 24/7 that traditional marriage is for losers. This programming starts from an early age and is moving the needle, as the stats show.

Advice to young men: the more money you make, the more likely you’ll end up divorced and in permanent debt slavery.

I recommend for men, especially in this day and age, to find a good woman who does not believe in marriage. Believe in marriage as in the way society has conditioned them anyway. Everything about marriage is about the woman. A ring, the man has to get down on his knee, the wedding must showcase her as some kind of treasure, the endless laws concerning children and the way abuse can be a weapon used by women are all reasons why, imo, that women are held to a higher place than men. Instead of MGTOW, find a good woman in a state that does NOT recognize common law marriage and commit to each other FOR LIFE. This is a very difficult woman to find. That’s the advice I have for young men.

Marriage is a piece of paper. Hmmm, why is that soooo important? It’s a contract made between a man a woman and the state. I wouldn’t go into a contract with the state if at all possible.
