Everything in the letter below is real. I got back from the hospital at 2AM this morning. I’ll be returning in a little while.

RE: Letter of Appreciation
Yesterday evening I called 9-1-1.
My mom, 88 years old, hadn’t gotten out of bed in two days. In fact, she hadn’t even changed positions. She suffers from severe arthritis and her pain level is a constant level 9. But, even more concerning are two very large open wounds she has on each lower leg.
She is of sound mind and has refused to see a doctor, or go to a hospital, despite the constant pleadings of my father, my sister and her husband, my wife and, of course, myself. When I came to the house yesterday she told me that she felt she was going to die soon.
My sister and I decided that enough is enough, and we decided to call 9-1-1. We hoped that they could look at the wounds, explain to her how serious the situation was, and that she really must go to the hospital. Before entering the house, both the EMS folks and Officer Ortiz told me that if my mother is of sound mind that they cannot force a patient to go to the emergency room … but, they would try.
And they did try because both wounds were severely infected. As usual she refused to go despite the urgings of everyone in the room. It looked like we failed, and I was so disheartened.
BUT … then Officer Ortiz gave it another shot. Somehow he was able to use his superior negotiating skills to convince my mom to go to the hospital!!! Sir/Madam, you have no idea what a “miracle” this is!
I am deeply grateful for Officer Ortiz’s patience and caring. The people of South Plainfield are very fortunate to have such a high caliper professional serving the community.

First it was me, Ms Freud, my sis and her hubby trying to convince mom to go to the hospital. No, no, no, and no!!! Then the 4 EMS people did the best they could. More no’s. Then the wonderful cop stepped in. This is the condensed version;

Option two is that I make a call to our staff psychologist and he will likely conclude you are not capable of making the right decision. In that case you will go to the hospital anyway but your stay will likely be two to three weeks. I don’t think that’s what you or anyone else here wants so, please make the decision to go voluntarily.
Also, Mrs. K., if you choose the second option that means a lot of paperwork for me, and I hate paperwork. It also means I’ll get home late and that’s unfortunate because today is my wife’s birthday. You seem like a wonderful lady and I know you wouldn’t want me to miss my wife’s birthday”

Again, this is a condensed version. There was a lot more back and forth between mom and the cop. For example, one thing about the cop — his left arm was heavily tattooed. My mom HATES tats. So, while the cop was talking about his wife’s birthday mom interrupted him and blurts out; “Why did you do that to your arm? I’ll bet your mom hates it!!”. heh heh. It was pretty hilarious. Maybe you had to be there.
Oh, a couple other things. After they wheeled mom into the EMS the cop pulled us aside and informed us he told a few little fibs … and hoped we didn’t mind.
— First of all, they DO have a psychiatrist he would have called. But, he said it’s pretty clear that mom has all her faculties, and there was likely no way he would have forced her to go to the hospital.
— Second, it wasn’t his wife’s birthday! He said he decided to pull on her heartstrings because she seemed like a really kind-hearted lady, and because my sis and I were desperate to get her to the hospital. He thought we wouldn’t mind the little deception …. and we didn’t.

Mom’s leg wound problems started before dad died. He used to scream and shout at her to go to the hospital.

Sorry, but I am with Anonymous here. A woman, almost 90, who is in unrelenting pain from an incurable condition, is being dragged out of her bed at home, why?
Now she can go to the hospital and get hooked up to all kinds of stuff.. which she didn’t want? With a good chance of dying there rather than at home? Ugh… I was lucky if I got two hours’ sleep a night when I was in the hospital, and they gave me so much Dilaudid I stopped breathing.
I think it SUCKS that the police officer LIED TO HER about her getting COMMITTED.. plus all the other stuff.

With reduced pain and a touch of opiod induced uphoria she may not hate living so much. No worries about addiction as she will need it for the rest of her days right? Sent my own letter of appreciation, commendation, and thanks to a local sheriff as his dispatcher and deputy actually saved my life just last week.
The law enforcement folks out my way are first rate professionals and deserve nothing but courtesy and respect as that is what they provide to the good people around my neck of the woods.
They are, however, no-nonsense no-bullshit, kickin’ ass and takin’ names when it comes to individuals or groups engaged in violent, dangerous or criminal activities.
