THIS DAY IN HISTORY – Battle of the Little Bighorn – 1876

Via History.com

On June 25, 1876, Native American forces led by Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull defeat the U.S. Army troops of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer in the Battle of the Little Bighorn near southern Montana’s Little Bighorn River.

Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, leaders of the Sioux tribe on the Great Plains, strongly resisted the mid-19th-century efforts of the U.S. government to confine their people to reservations. In 1875, after gold was discovered in South Dakota’s Black Hills, the U.S. Army ignored previous treaty agreements and invaded the region.

This betrayal led many Sioux and Cheyenne tribesmen to leave their reservations and join Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse in Montana. By the late spring of 1876, more than 10,000 Native Americans had gathered in a camp along the Little Bighorn River–which they called the Greasy Grass–in defiance of a U.S. War Department order to return to their reservations or risk being attacked.

In mid-June, three columns of U.S. soldiers lined up against the camp and prepared to march. A force of 1,200 Native Americans turned back the first column on June 17. Five days later, General Alfred Terry ordered Custer’s 7th Cavalry to scout ahead for enemy troops. On the morning of June 25, Custer drew near the camp and decided to press on ahead rather than wait for reinforcements.

At mid-day, Custer’s 600 men entered the Little Bighorn Valley. Among the Native Americans, word quickly spread of the impending attack. The older Sitting Bull rallied the warriors and saw to the safety of the women and children, while Crazy Horse set off with a large force to meet the attackers head on. Despite Custer’s desperate attempts to regroup his men, they were quickly overwhelmed. Custer and some 200 men in his battalion were attacked by as many as 3,000 Native Americans; within an hour, Custer and every last one of his soldier were dead.

The Battle of the Little Bighorn—also called Custer’s Last Stand—marked the most decisive Native American victory and the worst U.S. Army defeat in the long Plains Indian War. The gruesome fate of Custer and his men outraged many white Americans and confirmed their image of the Indians as wild and bloodthirsty. Meanwhile, the U.S. government increased its efforts to subdue the tribes. Within five years, almost all of the Sioux and Cheyenne would be confined to reservations.

Broke the treaties because of gold. Imagine that. Some things never change. The US still does the same – Iraq anyone? Killing for money, gold, land or oil – the American modus operandi since forever.

It’s the story of all mankind throughout history, is it not? Americans (implicitly white people) have no monopoly on depravity.

Just a couple of interesting things about George:
1. He graduated at the bottom of his class. (hmmm)
2 He didn’t think it was necessary to take any gatling guns with him. (dumbfuck. see #1)

But on a positive note, he had real nice hair.

If you are going to be an arrogant soldier, you best have some serious chops to support that arrogance. Douglas MacArthur would be Exhibit A of that truth.

Old Yellow Hair was arrogant but had no talent to back it up. Too bad he took so many soldiers down with him.

Too bad he took so many soldiers down with him.

100 yrs later (VN) he would have gotten one (or a whole lot more) in the back for getting them in that situation.

Your thinking is about as deep as a puddle on a hot highway in July.

Like a parrot, parroting the mainstream news.

With a piece of string I can prove Pi is not 4, yet you think the guy is a savant.

And he believes John Lennon faked his death and lives in a Canada.

Too funny. Cretin gives him too much credit. He is even stupider than that. He is an idiot.

.22, yet again, proving his batting average is lower than what a 2 year old could achieve.

They won the battle but lost the war .

What isn’t known is that Biden and Obama’s ancestors were the scouts. Private Biden told Custer….sir there isn’t an injun’ within 5 miles of here . Private Dunham ( obozo’s great grandfather ) 2nd the report . They had coffee with private Saul Alinsky after that report .

Two if by Sea.
Unfortunately, Custer, who was a good Union General, was demoted for witnessing against U.S. Grants administration regarding the “Whiskey Ring”.
Only the public outcry against the humiliation sent Custer to the battle re-promoted back to his former rank.
It is highly likely Custer took this slight on his sleeve towards battle.
Kind of Like Gen. Lee having the shits at Gettysburg, it`s the little things.
