This quote rings true today! Just replace Britain with the united States and it all applies.
The US taxes its citizens no matter where on earth they live. Some people (a great many, actually), were born on American soil while their parents were passing through, or there on business, are caught in that trap, and the US pursues them for taxes though they have no other ties whatsoever to the US.
Should you wish to move elsewhere, you cannot give up your citizenship so as to exit the tax trap. That is illegal. If you wish to give up your citizenship, there is a thousands of dollar charge to do it, and months, perhaps years of delay, to organize it. Plus you will be subject to an exit tax. The US has passed laws requiring other nations to identify and report Americans living abroad, and failing to do so will result in those nations having severe fines and sanctions applied agains them.
States are now beginning to impose the same regime – want to leave California? The proposal is that you will still be required to pay California tax for ten years hence.
Make no mistake – Americans are cattle and chattel of the US government. Americans are tax cows, for so long as you may live.

Americans may wish to remain Americans forever. But freedom of movement an inalienable right, so long as the place to which you wish to move will accept you, and the US is taking action to strip that right from Americans. You may not leave, and if you do leave you will be punished. And anyone who accepts you will be punished.
Tyranny is here. It is visible to all who will look. Australia is much the same.

There are two genuine ways to avoid paying taxes;
—1) Be rich.
—2) Be poor.
I fit into one of those categories.
You will still pay sales tax and the cost of business’ taxes when you buy products.
We had hoped to retire to Florida and had visited there many
times to visit family. There are no go zones/there is crime.
Then the areas we preferred became crazy over populated,
granted there were endless tourists. There is a water shortage,
and storms, and if the electricity goes out/look out below. Last,
there is a large homeless population. Yet when the snow falls
and the wood stove supplements our heat/I still miss the ocean
and warm weather, Our present area is poor. So far, I do feel
free. And so far I can (we can) afford a modest lifestyle.
Note: When the big salary stops, the life style stops.
