Official 2022 Olympics Comments Thread

Love it or hate it,  the Winter Olympics will be with us for the next two weeks.

It already has been an incredible event.  I’m referring to the Putin-Xi joint statement … a “Mein Kampf”  manifesto, in that they are giving formal notice on exactly what their strategic goals are (in confronting the West).

So, post your thoughts as events progress!  Good, bad, or indifferent.

Really looking forward to the masses condemning this thread — “BREAD & CIRCUSES!! Get a life Stucky, ya dipshit!!“.  Other possible topics.  Opening ceremony (if you watched it, as I did.)  Favorite events.  Least favorite.  Which countries you cheer for, which ones you hate.  Are you hoping someone dies during the Ski Jump competition? And so on and so forth … you know the drill.

Don’t forget funny stuff, too!  The Chinks sometimes have a really hard time translating their thoughts into English. I mean, Engrish.  This is an actual restaurant sign in Peking!

Beijing is trying to rid city of Chinglish before 2022 ...

You should never watch. It’s all a giant sales/propaganda event. If the US wins zero medals, what changes for you? If the US wins all the medals, what changes for you? Unplug from this nonsense. The only thing different about it is we’re re-living 1936 and China is Nazi Germany part II.

Last one I remember watching part of – I think it was raining heavy outside – had Olga Korbut & Nadia Comaneci. Gymnastics is cool. But contortions, not so much.

Saw episode 2 of new season Billions. The new master of the hedge fund universe is plotting to bring the Oly schmear to the Bagel – to get back his woman & return his loss record to zero. And it had a scene of him hanging on a wall with Alex Honnold. And Libby’s canned woke pretexts.

Sounds good. But bs. Politics continues war by other means, & special oly sports is just another political appendage. :

I was 10 yrs old, and can only barely remember ‘something’. Most likely, because I WANTED to be an OLYMPIAN when I grew up. Probably about the same time I wanted too be a…fireman, policeman, soldier, etc. Had Julian Assange been in the news up until the time I was in my late teens?, 20? I would have gladly hunted him down personally, for which I am very ashamed.

I can’t believe hardly anything currently…the orange prince having SEALED the DEAL.

Looking back, (Munich), IT WAS PROBABLY THE FIRST FALSE FLAG/HOLLYWOOD PRODUCTION I was exposed to, AND MORE ARE COMING.

Sorry Stucky I don’t watch sport (except snooker but that’s a game not a sport as I define it). I avoid it like the plague. Never could be doing with it even at school when they even had us at it in weekends; except I found many ingenious ways to avoid it, and that was good training on its own. At cross-country running we used it to grab a smoke and get lost. But climbing trees is OK.

Sorry to disappoint. I dislike ‘team’ things, group activities like scouts, and anything involving a commissar referee or umpire or whatever. I enjoy cruise sailing & navigation, done it all my life, single-handed preferably and with a destination in mind (with a pub, preferably foreign); definitely NOT just doodling around aimlessly on a pond and definitely not RACING – bloody madness and life-threatening. I love skiing (not jumping) but (not off-piste) especially après-ski but I’m not fit enough nowadays, muscles too weak.

I excel at horse riding (hunting & jumping) and have owned a horse most of my adult life – hopeless in UK with few places to hack/gallop but in South Africa I had the whole of the Karoo. In Texas I actually rode my horse into the bar as he liked a drink of beer. I also enjoy archery, especially longbow (which remains the most lethal of weapons in a skilled hand, silent, rapid fire rate, deadly accurate and hard hitting) and target rifle/hunting but only in South Africa when we track down Kudu and make biltong (jerky to you?). Clay shooting and skeet with 12 bore is really good and in UK is OK, many clubs abound especially in the countryside where I live. (Well, not really live, rather stay, I can only really ‘live’ down in the southern hemisphere where the sun is).

I like to climb mountains – Snowdon was fun, but in the winter though. I also enjoy hiking/orienteering and pedal biking but again not RACING. I never aspire to ‘win’ in anything competitive which I try to avoid. I believe that the early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

I have only hit two balls together once in my life – that was when I stood on a rake. So golf is definitely out as I don’t have good ‘timing’ which also applies to dancing and music in general and I can’t sing at all – in fact they used to pay me NOT to sing in church. I took flying lessons in a Cessna 150 in my younger days – did 13 hours prior to solo – but stalled on landing approach, panicked, instructor saved the day and advised that I lacked 3D spacial awareness so I should stick at ground level. Never done a balloon flight but lots around in Bristol (where they famously make them) – tempted.

I think sport is a total waste of time and energy which would be better spent making, building or blowing something up. It is a constant round of whose best this year and whose for next year for the cup, trophy, gong or whatever idiot dedicated the damn thing so long ago everybody has forgotten what is was about in the first place.

Well that’s my potted life in sport, so I won’t be commenting on the Olympics today. 🙂

I used to show jump and do dressage competitively in my youth. You can never completely get cured from the horse virus once you catch it, I miss that.

We shoot recurve bows in our family. I am a wimp, draw weight only 30 lbs. Not enough for hunting, but that is not my aim anyway.

Austrian Peter
Austrian Peter
  Svarga Loka
February 6, 2022 12:38 am

Yes, Svarga, I feel the same way about horses (lovely , gentle and intelligent creatures – well, most are – you can sometimes get a rogue). But for me, it also applies to sailing. I got the bug when I was 18 in a dingy on Loch Long in Scotland and progressed to a keel boat shortly thereafter. Never done show jumping/dressage, that’s a real art; hacking & hunting for me.

You will know that the average pull weight of an English longbow is said to be 80lbs – but Quora says: “The draw weight was from somewhere around 90 lb to 185 lb. The median of the bows on the Mary Rose was 135–160 lb with one going as high as 172-185 lb – bloody amazing, they were tough little buggers in those days.

I could never pull anything like 80. To do this, the English archers had to train hard and build up their pulling arm. They had to attend the Butts by statute law and couldn’t leave their parish on a Sunday.

“It is clear that there were laws requiring archery practice dating back to at least the 13th century. The motive was to make sure England had enough men trained to use the longbow, which for centuries was a crucial weapon for the English.”

(NB: ‘English’ not ‘British’. You can become British by naturalisation but never English, which is only by descent. Immigrants can never be English which is why I put my country of birth as England and not Britain)

Do Englishmen Still Have to Show Up for Longbow Practice?

I guess it’s more a ‘pastime’ and given the time that is required to pass in order to get your fish, it seems appropriate. I approve of it as a hunting skill but don’t have the patience myself. But competitive fishing should be classified a sport IMHO.

A an expert archer is around 5 MOA at 100 yards. A pretty good rifle shot is 1/5 – 1/10 that with vastly higher rate of fire and far less drift on windy days, with range that extends a mile past that of a longbow in e pert hands. There is no distance where a bow is more lethal than a firearm. At point blank range a reasonable estimate of longbow arrow energy with a 170 pound draw (which is very slow cycling as that is a draw weight for very few, and is very hard to do) is 96 ft pounds. For comparison, a .308 round has around 2700 ft pound muzzle energy. AP was using severe literary license when he said bows were most lethal, because they ain’t even close.

Austrian Peter

Yes, I was – but I was also alluding to the silent nature of a longbow as a stealth weapon of ambush and the impact power is something to behold:

“Arrows could penetrate chain mail with relative ease, and frequently did, making plate armour more and more necessary. A famous passage by Giraldus Cambrensis in the twelfth century mentions a Welsh arrow going through a mounted man’s mailed leg and his saddle, killing his horse. Cambrensis also recounts an arrow driving through an oak door “four fingers in thickness”. Clearly, longbows were a force to be reckoned with.”

Why was the Longbow so effective?

Now there’s a challenge Stucky. I hadn’t thought of that and it is something I am sure I would enjoy – except the cross country ski bit. I know how hard it on piste so off it I guess would be really tough. Good training for winter troops though. I stand in admiration of these guys, so maybe I will concede to you, and just watch this!

I remember once at Val Thorens (https://www.valthorens.com/en/) in the Trois Vallées, the highest of ski resorts, they said if you fall off the button, whatever you do, don’t try and step up to the top – you won’t make it.

Well inevitably, I fell just 100 yards from the top and tried the climb. No chance – at 7,500 feet I ran out of breath long before the top and had to ski back down and try again. The pisser is having to stand in the queues again and at minus 5 you get chilled quickly which requires mucho brandy from the backpack. Skiing after that gets a little blurry!

As most of our TBPers have no interest in this games – ZH has confirmed that it it a general malaise around the world:

“Putin snoozing, ratings cratering, and a token Uyghur to insult the intelligence of anyone still watching with at least two brain cells – this year’s 2022 Winter Olympics is shaping up to be an absolute disaster. Viewership for Friday’s Opening Ceremony was a dismal 16 million, as NBC faces what Yahoo!sports’ Dan Wetzel called a “cataclysmic loss” of audience – a record low.

“As Just the News notes, a recent Morning Consult poll of 2,000 American adults found that 65% have a lack of interest in the events, 57% said they have no interest in athletes, and 40% said it was because China was hosting.”

What in the Wide Wide World of Sports is going on “these days”? I use to enjoy watching not only olympic downhill skiing and the ski jumping but also that aired by WWWS in the 60’s and 70’s…”The thrill of victory … and the agony of defeat”

‘China’ effect I think. These games are so much censored that most have turned their backs.

Oh that’s not nice, poor little soul. Probably had no idea what’s going down in CCP. Although she could have noted the other one (forgot name – not good with Chinese handles) – that screamed blue murder and rape?

She has reappeared apparently after several weeks ‘re-education’ – and my friend who was in Nam, and (unusually is happy to talk about it being well adjusted now) – tells me the gooks have well honed methods of ‘re-educating’ you.
