Justin Trudeau Ducks the Great Trucker Revolt

The resistance reveals itself always in unexpected ways. As I type, thousands of truckers (numbers are in flux and are in dispute) are part of a 50-mile-long convoy in Canada, headed to the capital city of Ottawa in protest against an egregious vaccine mandate imposed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. They will be joined upon arrival by vast numbers of protestors who are defying the restrictions, closures, and mandates of the last nearly two years.

The triple-vaccinated Trudeau, meanwhile, has decided that he has to go into deep hiding because he was exposed to Covid. A clean, ruling-class, fit, and fashionable lefty like him cannot be expected to face such a pathogen directly. As a member of the vanguard of the lockdown elite, he must never take risks (however small) and must keep himself safe. It is merely a matter of coincidence that he will be locked away in hiding as the truckers arrive together with hundreds of thousands of citizens who are fed up with being treated like lab rats.

Previously, Trudeau had said nearly two years ago that the truckers were heroes. On March 31, 2020, he tweeted: “While many of us are working from home, there are others who aren’t able to do that – like the truck drivers who are working day and night to make sure our shelves are stocked. So when you can, please #ThankATrucker for everything they’re doing and help them however you can.”

Authoritarian Madness: The Slippery Slope from Lockdowns to Concentration Camps

In the politically charged, polarizing tug-of-war that is the debate over COVID-19, we find ourselves buffeted by fear over a viral pandemic that continues to wreak havoc with lives and the economy, threats of vaccine mandates and financial penalties for noncompliance, and discord over how to legislate the public good without sacrificing individual liberty.

The discord is getting more discordant by the day.

Just recently, for instance, the Salt Lake Tribune Editorial Board suggested that government officials should mandate mass vaccinations and deploy the National Guard “to ensure that people without proof of vaccination would not be allowed, well, anywhere.”

Starbucks, Carhartt Take Opposite Stand on Vaccine Mandates — Both Take Heat From Consumers

The U.S. Supreme Court’s rejection of the Biden administration’s vaccine-or-test mandate for private businesses left companies like Starbucks and Carhartt scrambling to decide whether they should abandon the mandate or force their employees to be vaccinated.

Starbucks was one of the first major retailers to backtrack on its plans to require workers to be vaccinated against COVID.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s Jan. 13 ruling striking down the Biden administration’s vaccine-or-test mandate for private businesses left many companies scrambling to decide whether they should abandon the mandate or force their employees to be vaccinated while the lawsuit plays out in the lower courts.

Meanwhile, a coalition of attorneys general from 27 states is calling on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to rescind its Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) because it lacks the authority to issue a broad vaccine mandate.

Starbucks was one of the first major retailers to backtrack on its plans to require workers to be vaccinated against COVID. Starbucks on Tuesday told its 228,000 employees at more than 9,000 U.S. coffee shops it would no longer require workers be fully vaccinated or submit to weekly COVID testing.

The DC Rally and the Rise of the Resistance

By long American tradition, protest movements manifest themselves most fully in gatherings in Washington, D.C, starting at the Washington Monument and culminating in speeches at the Lincoln Memorial. At long last, after two years of astonishing attacks on fundamental rights that most everyone once believed were protected by the U.S. Constitution, this happened today, January 23, 2022.

It didn’t just happen actually. It wasn’t spontaneous. It was paid for, planned, organized, put together, and broadcast on online media. There was nothing but sincere love of what we used to call liberty behind these efforts. The speakers, organizers, and people who showed up took huge risks in order to salvage what is left of the Founders’ vision. They deserve every credit for this. Bless them.

The Lemming State And COVID Tyranny

I recently learned that in Greece people over 60 who aren’t vaccinated can get fined $100 a day until they get the vaccine. Considering the bad shape the economy of Greece has been in and that many people, especially the elderly, aren’t likely very financially well off, this seems an unnecessarily harsh measure. But, of course, this vaccine tyranny has nothing to do with protecting the people of Greece from COVID. It has to do with a political force exerting total control over a hapless people to see how far they can push them, or so it seems to me.

But what is this political body? Is it an agency of the Grecian government? Or is it something outside the national state that is making it do its bidding for some entirely execrable reason? Something more global, something more sinister?

It is curious how countries as geographically, ethnically, and culturally diverse as New Zealand, Austria, and Greece have imposed tyrannical control over their inhabitants in an if-you-don’t-get-the-vaccines-you-will-be-sorry putsche. As we’ve seen, this punitive action takes the form of house arrest, fines, and spells in a gulag where similar vaccine miscreants are held under conditions that smack of fascism, communism, totalitarianism, and, perhaps, globalism?

The point I want to make about this here is that it has the appearance of some external governing force conducting a test to see how people of different cultures and religions, traditions, values, economic statuses, mindsets, expectations, and so on, react to otherwise identical punitive measures. These measures further seem to be scripted by this unknown outside force, and, quite disturbingly, they neither take individual freedoms into consideration nor do they give a damn about them! It’s about (achtung!) conformity, submissiveness, and obsequiousness.

Mandates Are About Political Control, Not Health

For two years, the political class’s ineptitude has been on full display. School shutdowns, business closures, and endless mask mandates have all proven relatively ineffective at stemming the spread of COVID-19 (never mind reducing hospitalizations and deaths), yet politicians continued instituting these harmful and useless measures in a desperate attempt to be perceived as doing something.

But over the past month or so, it has become inescapable that sheer incompetence and ignorance can no longer be the sole explanation for two years of bungled policies. Rather, the craven mindset of many of our leaders in both parties (albeit primarily Democrats) is manifest. They are using our bodies to score cheap political points, impervious to the injury they are inflicting upon us.

Worst of all are the vaccine mandates, which come in countless forms. Universities, including public ones, are requiring faculty, staff, and students to vaccinate against COVID-19 in order to remain employed or enrolled. Many, for example Washington and Lee University in Virginia, Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and the CUNY and SUNY state schools in New York, are now requiring boosters.

As an attorney who has filed a number of lawsuits challenging vaccine mandates coming from both public university employers and the federal government, I am contacted every day by myriad students, faculty and employees at these universities. Many now are double-vaccinated and COVID-19 recovered. A significant portion had recent bouts with COVID-19, which is unsurprising given that Omicron swept across much of the nation in a very brief time period. Yet, for students to continue their education at the universities they may have invested significant time, emotional energy and resources into attending, they are being coerced into getting a useless medical procedure that many legitimately fear could harm them.
