The Soundtrack Of This Age

Guest Post by The Zman

When I was a boy, my grandfather would tool around in his car listening to big band music or classical. The former was the music of his youth, while the latter was what he thought sophisticated people liked. He was not wrong about that. In his youth, the kind of music you could dance to was for proles, while the sophisticated people appreciated classical and opera. It was not as clear cut as that, but the early 20th century was a time when people still looked up for guidance and inspiration. That included entertainments.

More Awesome Voices

This will the last of this “series”.  First, it takes a helluva long time sifting through all the bullshit titles .. “best video ever!!, “world’s best singer ever!!” … “guaranteed to make you cry!!”, ad infinitum el shittem.  Second, I think all the great ones have been posted.  Third, I can’t remember what I posted previously. Getting old sucks!  Fourth,  can’t remember what I posted previously.

I don’t know why I always get a tear in my eye when I hear “Amazing Grace” …. even when a 600+ pound teenager sings it. (Well, I do know, but it’s a story I will likely never reveal here.)

Not overly talented …. there’s just something special about a 71 year old woman singing “KISS MY ASS!!

We Love You, Morons

Ever wonder how people get away with claiming they have the best interests at heart of people they despise? Read on.

Submitted by Robert Gore at Straight Line Logic

Are most people too stupid, ignorant, and benighted to comprehend truth in the sciences, appreciate beauty in the arts, and embrace wisdom in politics? That question captures the bedrock assumption guiding a sliver of the populace, a self-anointed elite who cover their disdain for everyone else with altruistic professions of humanitarian concern. They’re curiously contradictory posture: we despise common tastes, choices, and beliefs, but we stand four square for the common “folk” (one of President Obama’s favorite words). After over a century of such sententiousness, the “common folk” are beyond irritated. Before the charade blows up completely, however, this claim to intellectual, aesthetic, and moral superiority, its widespread acceptance and its devastating effects, must be dissected, analyzed, and understood.

Walk into any museum of modern art and you’ll soon come upon a work that, if you’re honest with yourself, you have no idea how or why it’s called art. Maybe its a few squiggly lines, or a geometric representation indistinguishable from the floor tiles in a restroom you once visited, or three blank, white canvases (these examples came from a simple Google search: modern art, images), but no matter what “masterpiece” first evokes it, the feeling grows that a fraud is being perpetrated. Visual art is chosen here because it’s the most obvious, but listening to the music from today’s supposed heirs to Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff, or reading the precious gems that win contemporary literary prizes and awards will also produce that sinking sensation of intellectual and aesthetic victimization. You have, in fact, been had, and it’s vitally important to unravel this con game and what it accomplishes.

Can you get past the outer shell?

I’ve done these twice previously, and while these things don’t get many comments, it seems folks have enjoyed them.

Here are a few more (sorry if one or two are repeats … I can’t remember all the thousands of posts I’ve made.)

Ms. Freud cried at one or two of these.

Can you get past the stereotypes?

7 Children Who Will Put A Smile On Your Face And A Tear In Your Eye (and restore your faith in humanity)

Tired of Doom Porn? Of course you are!  Watch one or two, take a break, come back and watch the others. They’re all terrific.  Best to watch the intro part, and not just skip to the music part. Some of these kids have a wonderful story to tell.

I might have posted one or more of these before. So what. Sue me. Not everyone has been here forever. And good stuff deserves to be posted more than once …. like that picture Admin has posted 649 times of him kicking SSS in the nuts.

Just one request.  If this type of thing isn’t your cup of tea, then just stop right now and click on something else.  In other words, it’s not necessary for you to let the world know —“I don’t like this. Wah! Wah! It sucks.” No one cares.  In other words .. just shut the fuck up.

1)  Quite simply …. PREPARE … to get blown away …. from the very first note.

WE WANT YOUR SOUL!!

This vid is a cynical look at the American dream. Keep up with the Joneses, bitchezz!! I think the lyrics are great, and the camera effects are amusing and cool.

Warning!! There IS nudity in the vid.

The lyrics … if you’re too impatient to watch an eight minute video.

[coke commercial]

your cellphone, your wallet, your time, your ideas
no bar-code, no party, no ID, no beers
your bankcard, your license, your thoughts, your fears
no SIM card, no disco, no photo, not here
your blood, your sweat, your passions, your regrets
your profits, your time off, your fashions, your sex
your pills, your grass, your tits, your ass
your laughs, your balls, we want it all (we want your soul)

your cash, your house, your phone, your life (we want your soul)

Music Trumps Bombs

After A Bomb In Baghdad

A little Monday  morning inspiration. This man isn’t just playing music. He’s saying “FUCK YOU!!” to the terrorists. They can destroy buildings … they can’t destroy the human spirit, at least not this man’s.

In April, a car bomb attack in Al Mansour, Baghdad left a shopping center tattered and dozens dead. Hours later, Karim Wasfi carried his cello to the bombing site, sat down amid the rubble and began playing.

Said one Iraqi man —  “He is playing music for the souls of the people who died just a few hours ago. I can imagine them listening too, and wondering ‘why’?”

When interviewed later, Wasfi had this to say: “The Iraqi people want to live and protect their civilization and heritage. Civilization started in Iraq and will continue and never die.”

The sound quality isn’t that great, but that’s not what matters …
