I haven’t followed, and really don’t care to, this mess like some of you. But Israel seems to me to be that guy who runs his mouth with a really tough buddy next to him. Correct me if I’m wrong here, but if they lose our love and support aren’t they fucked beyond belief? I mean, they’re surrounded by orthodox religions that hate them, right?

@Tommy: yes. Without the “Blaster” part of the US-Israel “Master/Blaster” relationship, they would be lucky to feed themselves and have lights on, even without any conflict. In the event of a conflict, they would maybe have a couple weeks of fighting in them, then I expect they would exercise the Nuclear Holocaust, errr I mean “Samson Option”, on everything within range, before going out of business permanently.
It’s a really, really sick and wrong situation.

What we have here is a war by proxy. It’s Israel ( 21st century, Western culture) vs. Psycho Arab Tribes (the 11th century) / the civil society vs. uncivilized barbarians.

People on both sides have computers, cell phones, etc. This isn’t a war of primitive pre-technological peoples against modern, as was true for so many of the 19th Century colonial wars. Not even close. One side has the most advanced military weapons due to US support, and the other side has scraps and smuggled whatever due to the opponent’s multi-decade use of blockades. This is far more comparable to “The Troubles” in northern Ireland, except that the UK never started shelling Ulster.
As far as mentalities go, no. Israel certainly has people who are in the 21st century and have western values, but those people do not run its government or military right now. This is a battle of a truly ancient pre-Common Era tribal mentality against a marginally different 7th Century tribal mentality. As far as values go, it is a battle of backwards primitives, on both sides.

Compare the Japanese in WWII, who clearly had a technological and sophisticated culture, yet committed beheadings, death marches, suicide bombings (Kamikaze), etc. Cruelty and barbarism is not the same as primitivism or lack of technology.

From the 3rd Century until 1900 the percentage of the population of Palestine that was Jewish was around 4-5%, close to the percentage of Christians there. It wasn’t until the Zionists started to move into Palestine around 1900 that the problems started. You can’t abandon your home for 1600 years and then come back and say, “Hey, this is my land!” You should not be surprised when the people living there fight you especially when living there is not enough for you, you want to own and run the place.
For over 50 years we have watched the Israelis use every means available to kill, torture, and brutalize the Palestinians. It was israel using the latest, most technologically advanced weapons against what amounts to sticks and stones and STILL the Israelis can not win against the Palestinians. Often lost in these debates is that most Israelis and most Palestinians are not zealots. Most Israelis want to live in peace. Most Palestinians do too, but not in concentration camp surroundings. As with many things stateside, it would be nice here if we could round up the people who are actually flaming asshole zealots, have them all eliminate each other, and then leave the good people on each side to live in peace and quiet.
Sure, greatgrandsonofsandniggersman and his ilk will deride this, but how will they feel when all Americans are hated and targeted for violence because of the Neocons’ starting of WW3? Does anyone here genuinely support the efforts of the current administration to start WW3, as seen in Syria, Ukraine and elsewhere?

Judging from the pictures ,the Israelis did not flatten nearly enough buildings. They did a half assed job and will have to do it again in a year or two. The first rule of war is to kill the other side until they don`t fight back anymore.
At a minimum the Israelis should destroy so much infrastructure and housing that the Palestinians would not be able to fight for 10 years.
