BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — An 8-year-old boy is being charged with beating a 1-year-old girl to death while they were left home alone as their mothers went to a nightclub, Alabama police said Tuesday.
The boy beat and killed 1-year-old Kelci Devine Lewis when she wouldn’t stop crying, Birmingham police spokesman Sean Edwards said. The mother of the toddler, 26-year-old Katerra Lewis, also is charged with manslaughter, he said.
“This is by far one of the saddest cases that I have witnessed and been a part of since I became a police officer,” Edwards said. “This type of irresponsibility on behalf of a parent is totally unacceptable.”
Police said a murder warrant has been obtained for the boy, who is now in the care of Alabama’s child welfare agency, the Department of Human Resources. His case will go through the family court system. There is no minimum age for prosecution in Alabama, said Tobie Smith, of the Legal Aid Society of Birmingham.
The 8-year-old was the oldest of six children left alone as his mother, who has not been charged or identified, and Katerra Lewis went to a nightclub on Oct. 11, Edwards said.
A woman who answered a call to a number listed for Lewis referred questions to attorney Emory Anthony.
“The only thing I can say at this time is to allow the process to play out,” Anthony said in an email. “I think there will be new information coming out at the hearing.”
A 6-year-old who was in the home told police what happened and the details were consistent with the toddler’s injuries, Edwards said.
Kelci Lewis suffered severe head trauma and major damage to her internal organs, Edwards said. Her body was found in her crib.
“I believe the 8 year-old is going to require some intense counseling for the next several years,” Edwards said. “It’s gonna take some extreme intervention.”
Smith, who is also co-director of the Southern Juvenile Defender Center, said she believes there “are going to be very serious questions about whether an 8-year-old has the rational capacity for the proceedings against him.”
“They’re gonna take a real look at whether maybe this is more a matter of parental culpability than child culpability,” Smith said.
Kim Dvorchak, executive director of the National Juvenile Defense Center, agreed.
“Children themselves are not really designed for a court system, and our court system — even our juvenile court systems — are not designed for very young children,” Dvorchak said.
Katerra Lewis’ Facebook profile photo Tuesday was an image of Kelci that had been printed on the back of a shirt. Another photo posted to her page showed that a fish fry fundraiser had been planned for Oct. 17 to cover Kelci’s funeral costs.
Court documents filed in June show that a judge ordered $388 for child-support payments to be withheld from the monthly income of a man identified as Timothy D. Pope. No one responded to messages left at phone numbers listed for Pope.
Katerra Lewis has posted $15,000 bond and is expected to appear in court Nov. 30, according to court documents.
26 years old with 6 children. Why do we continue to pay stupid people to breed? Why? Why? Why/? I’d blame leaving an 8 year old in charge except that I frequently read about the same thing happening with adults beating babies to death as well for the same reason.
Maybe it just reflects a general lack of respect for life that seems to be growing in prevalence in our current culture.

Every person is born with an innate sense of right and wrong — the natural law. Every person. At age 8, the boy knew that repeatedly hitting a baby — A BABY — is wrong. The article doesn’t mention that the boy was profoundly retarded, so there is no excuse.
Momma is out at a club instead of taking care of her six children. This is likely how she wound up with six children in the first place. And the victim’s momma thought leaving her baby in the care of an 8 year old boy was a sound decision. And no mention of a father in the article for any of the children. No parents + children raising children = perpetual immaturity and permanent enlistment in the FSA. Justice screams for both mothers to be punished.
Something is wrong with my reading comprehension skills. I read the piece
twice and still do not understand. I do get that a bunch of children were left
on their own while the mothers went out to a club.
I am aware that scores of preteen girls look forward to their fertility arriving so
they can have a baby, “and get an apartment of my own.” This is the norm
for a strata within the AA population. The girls’ mothers and grandmothers
had the same plan. One problem with the plan is that these young women
do not have any sense of good nutrition. The typical diet consists of soda,
chips, sweets and fast food. It could be that for some, alcohol and drugs are
also part of the mix. This is not conjecture. I have seen this, (in my short lived
career plan for midwifery) and have also seen that some of these women can be quite
brutal toward their children. Last, a few years ago, in Milwaukee, there was an
epidemic of “roll over” infant deaths/infants in bed with adults. google it. I don’t know
if this “problem” continues. Thankfully, I no longer live there.

It’s no oddity for 8 and 9 year old kids to care for their siblings.I’ve done it and seen others whose parents had chores that absolutely had to be done do it. I’ve also seen 8 year old boys driving farm machinery helping about the farm which is very good training for a productive future.Just take a trip to any Amish or Mennonite farm and you’ll see the same.
No the problem today is that parents start training their children to responsible adults way to late , if ever, to have any effect. And therein lies the problem. Completely different circumstances in your example. You mention Amish or Mennonite children and farm children where work and responsibility are not only taught but also demonstrated/modeled by two parents (as well as all other adults within the community). A solid work ethic and responsibility are instilled in those types of communities and children are taught how to take responsibility for their actions at young age. Those kids are capable of handling a babysitting chore. This article is about 2 women who decided to go clubbin’ and left a baby alone with an immature 8 year old (and presumably five other children under the age of 8 since he’s the oldest of the lot). No fathers mentioned in the article. Leaving the 8 year old to watch 6 other kids isn’t remotely defensible. It’s not like she asked the boy to watch them while she ran down to the store to pick up some milk or diapers. She and her girlfriend left the kids alone while they went out to drink alcohol and dance at a club.
Your insight about children not reaching full maturity because parents start training them too late is a great point. There seems to be a tendency to baby children for too long now. This article demonstrates the results of allowing immature and irresponsible adults to receive the basics of life for free without forming a family. Immaturity breeds further immaturity and selfishness. Nearly all kids are inward focused – what’s best for me – especially in a culture that glorifies the “I GOTZ MINE” attitude. It takes an adult to teach them to think of others and help others as part of a family first, then as part of a larger community. This was obviously lacking in this situation. Both mothers are responsible and deserve punishment.
