This $700 Billion Public Employee Ticking Time Bomb Is Only 6.7% Funded; Most States Are Under 1%

And you morons think shifting Obamacare to the states will make things better. Are you fucking brain dead? Look what they’ve done. The stupid, it burns.

Tyler Durden's picture

We’ve spent a lot of time of late discussing the inevitable public pension crisis that will eventually wreak havoc on global financial markets.  And while the scale of the public pension underfunding is unprecedented, with estimates ranging from $3 – $8 trillion, there is another taxpayer-funded retirement benefit that has been promised to union workers over the years that puts pensions to shame…at least on a percentage funded basis.

Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB), like pensions, are a stream of future payments that have been promised to retirees primarily to cover healthcare costs.  However, unlike pensions, most government entities don’t even bother to accrue assets for this massive stream of future costs resulting in $700 billion of liabilities that most taxpayer likely didn’t even know existed.

As a study from Pew Charitable Trusts points out today, the average OPEB plan in the U.S. today is only 6.7% funded (and that’s if you believe their discount rates…so probably figure about half that amount in reality) and many states around the country are even worse.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY – The Great New England Hurricane – 1938

Via History.com

Without warning, a powerful Category 3 hurricane slams into Long Island and southern New England, causing 600 deaths and devastating coastal cities and towns. Also called the Long Island Express, the Great New England Hurricane of 1938 was the most destructive storm to strike the region in the 20th century.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“If there is something in nature you don’t understand, odds are it makes sense in a deeper way that is beyond your understanding. So there is a logic to natural things that is much superior to our own. Just as there is a dichotomy in law: ‘innocent until proven guilty’ as opposed to ‘guilty until proven innocent’, let me express my rule as follows: what Mother Nature does is rigorous until proven otherwise; what humans and science do is flawed until proven otherwise.”

Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder

“The irony of the process of thought control: the more energy you put into trying to control your ideas and what you think about, the more your ideas end up controlling you.”

Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder

“You may never know what type of person someone is unless they are given opportunities to violate moral or ethical codes.”

“Most humans manage to squander their free time, as free time makes them dysfunctional, lazy, and unmotivated—the busier they get, the more active they are at other tasks.”

Sing Along!

(People who) Sing Along – with other people nearby!

Here’s a little food for thought today. People who “sing along.” I’m sure many of you had to “deal with” a person or two who fit this category.

There are many aspects to the whole “sing along” situation.

One, and the most familiar – is those who feel the need to sing along during a music concert. We feel this is fine – especially when the vocalist REQUESTS that the audience sing. And even in some instances, the music sounds better the more that join in. One case in point is….

Another (worse) example is people who listen to music at home via some audio device… say they’re in the kitchen or cleaning the house. They just sing along to keep themselves active, I guess. This is okay if they’re home alone – but with others trying to have their own thoughts nearby – it’s just not cool!

Why Did Jamie Dimon’s Firm Invest In Crypto After He Called Bitcoin A Fraud?

The Everything Bubble Is Ready To Pop

Authored by Jared Dillian via MauldinEconomics.com,

It wasn’t always this way. We never used to get a giant, speculative bubble every 7–8 years. We really didn’t.

In 2000, we had the dot-com bubble.

In 2007, we had the housing bubble.

In 2017, we have the everything bubble.

I did not coin the term “the everything bubble.” I do not know who did. Apologies (and much respect) to the person I stole it from.

Why do we call it the everything bubble? Well, there is a bubble in a bunch of asset classes simultaneously.

And the infographic below that my colleagues at Mauldin Economics created paints the picture best.

Graham/Cassidy does NOT repeal ObamaCare and I oppose it

Guest Post by Rand Paul

No one wants to repeal ObamaCare more than I do.  As a career physician, there are few in Congress who have as much firsthand experience on all sides of the health care debate as I do.  I’ve voted for repeal.  I’ve sponsored my own Repeal and Replace plans.

But I’ve also led the fight to stop and block “ObamaCare Lite” plans offered in both houses of Congress this year.  These have been plans that have spent nearly as much money as ObamaCare, that left most of the taxes and regulations in place, and basically failed to honor our promise of repeal.

Unfortunately, they’re back again, and I must add to the list of ObamaCare Lite plans to oppose the new Graham/Cassidy bill that was introduced last week in the Senate.

Financialization & The Destruction Of The Real Economy

Authored by Charles Hugh Smith via OfTwoMinds blog,

Strip an economy of capital, productive incentives, talent and yes, ethics, and what are we left with? An economy spiraling toward an inevitable collapse.

Financialization is destroying the real economy, but few in power seem to notice or care. The reason why is painfully obvious: those in power are reaping vast fortunes from the engines of financialization–for example, former President Obama: Obama Goes From White House to Wall Street in Less Than One Year.

The One Electric Car That Makes Some Sense . . .

Guest Post by Eric Peters

It’s interesting about the Chevy Volt.

Uniquely, it carries around its own recharger – so it’s not tied to a corded umbilical like other electric cars. So it isn’t gimped by a much-abbreviated radius of action, like all other electric cars – the best of which can travel maybe 150 or so miles before their batteries conk out and the car must hook up to an electric IV for an extended recharging session.

When the Volt’s battery pack’s charge runs down, fresh current is fed into it as you drive – without having to stop driving.

Iran’s Rouhani Responds To “Rogue Newcomer” Trump’s “Ugly, Ignorant Words”

Tyler Durden's picture

Following President Trump’s words yesterday and reports that he has “made his decision” on what to do about the Iran nuclear deal, Iranian President Rouhani just responded to “rogue newcomer” Trump, speaking at The United Nations, and also did not pull any punches…

As he spoke, his words were transcribed into a Tweetstorm…

US Sanctions Against Venezuela Will Hurt Americans

undefined

After fifty years of imposing embargoes and other sanctions, the United States never managed to topple Cuba’s communist regime. After forty years of the same in Iran, the US met with similar amounts of success. Ongoing sanctions against North Korea have not toppled to regime there.

But, some people in Washington won’t let decades of failure dissuade them.

Last week, Congressman Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) introduced new legislation to bar Americans from importing oil products from Venezuela. The Washington Examiner reports:

[T]he Protecting Against Tyranny and Responsible Imports Act, or the PATRIA Act … would target Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro after he stripped the country’s democratically elected national assembly of its power and authority. According to the bill, the proposed ban on imports would last until the assembly’s power is fully restored.

‘The goal is to change the conduct, the character of the Venezuelan government under Maduro. I think the window is closing,’ Coffman told the Washington Examiner. ‘They are dependent upon the export of oil really to fund their government, and without that, they can’t pay their security forces.’

Trump Slams Rand Paul As “Negative Force” On Fixing Healthcare; Paul Immediately Responds

Trump is an asshole. This piece of shit bill does not repeal and replace Obamacare. He’s a fucking liar. He’s just like every other scumbag politician in Washington DC. They just want to pass something before the 2018 mid-terms so they can say they did something. This fucking bill will not reduce your premiums, deductibles, co-pays or choices. It’s a joke. Rand Paul is the only Republican with balls. And he is no friend of Trump. Anything supported by that loser Lindsey Graham is definitely bad for America.
Tyler Durden's picture

Now that hopes for a bipartisan deal to fix Obamacare are dead and the Republicans are pushing on with a last-minute scramble to repeal Obamacare ahead of a Sept. 30 legislative deadline in hopes third time will be the charm, on Wednesday morning just after 8am, President Trump slammed Sen. Rand Paul for being a “negative force” on health care.

Rand Paul is a friend of mine but he is such a negative force when it comes to fixing healthcare. Graham-Cassidy Bill is GREAT! Ends Ocare!” Trump tweeted adding “I hope Republican Senators will vote for Graham-Cassidy and fulfill their promise to Repeal & Replace ObamaCare. Money direct to States!”
