There was once a mathematician who supposedly invented the game of chess and presented it to his king.

The king, impressed by the game, asked the mathematician to name his reward.

The mathematician asked for grains of wheat, using the chessboard to calculate the amount. He requested that a single grain of wheat be placed on the first square and then double it for every subsequent square.

This means two grains on the second square, four on the third, eight on the fourth, and so on, for all 64 squares on the chessboard.

Initially, the request seemed modest to the king, who agreed.

Good morning, fellow humans.

Regular readers here know I am a car guy, and I suppose it is inevitable to draw life lessons out of the most diverse places.  As we cruise in to 2024 then, let me share a thought.  Maybe it will be the seed of an idea to some.

Colin Chapman is known as the genius engineer and founder of the Lotus car company.  He had a somewhat unique philosophy for which he became famous: designing his cars to the absolute minimum weight possible.  His most famous quote is undoubtedly, “Simplify, then add lightness.”  Another one I am fond of is “Adding power makes you faster on the straights… subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere.”

I’m already liking 2024. Consequence is itching to return to the American scene. Somewhere around 2016, cause and effect got a divorce. After that, things just happened or unhappened with no further orders of effect, like some brute existence without purpose, meaning, or even awareness, except for the feeling of the lash on your back.

After a long journey through a dark place, treading ever-deeper into the unknown, knowing you are in the presence of demons from one footstep to the next, worrying incessantly that God has abandoned you. . . the alarm bell is ringing, the light is shining through, your eyes roll up like window-shades, and it’s time to get your mind right! Yes, even nations have bad dreams. Welcome to the Great Clarification.

Believe it or not, on New Year’s Eve, we still celebrate the ancient Roman religion/myth of Janus, who presided over the beginning and end. So one face looked at the past and the other the coming new year. In fact, January is named after Janus. He also represented the beginning and end of the conflict. In ancient Rome, the Temple of Janus stood in the Roman Forum with doors on both ends and inside was a statue of Janus, who is always represented as the two-faced god. The doors of his temple were open in times of war and closed to mark peace. This represented that things could change politically during a war.

I know most people are trapped in their normalcy bias, and are unwilling to address the cognitive dissonance they are experiencing because it is too painful and scary to accept what is coming. And it is coming soon. In the span of eternity, soon can mean tomorrow, next week, or five years from now.

With the current trajectory of global relations and the upcoming US presidential election, my guess would be a big war/civil war is likely to ignite sometime in the late 2024/early 2025 time frame. Anyone with critical thinking skills knows it is coming, so get mentally, physically, and spiritually prepared now.

AFTER CHRISTMAS DEALS

A number of serious commentators – one being U.S. Professor Victor Hanson – are warning: “Brace yourself for what’s coming in 2024”. Hansen sees bad omens darkening the future.

Is he exaggerating? Perhaps not.

One cannot but notice how bad tempered Americans and Europeans generally have become. Calm, reasoned discussion of issues is gone; Yelling, emotivism and ‘othering’ is commonplace; something bad is coming. A gut feeling, Tucker Carlson says. “There are “angry people who feel like they have no recourse, who don’t think elections are real…”.

What might these commentators be suggesting?
