Well, the COVID panic has been over for more than a year, and most people seem to be breathing a bit easier now, both literally and figuratively.

Most everyone has returned to their pre-COVID lives. The masks are mostly gone, and testing is only undertaken by a few people who remain in fear.

The great majority of people state that they did the “right thing” and got the requisite initial jabs, although a majority of people state that they decided against the boosters. The reason? Most are unclear on that, except to say that, “I was beginning to have doubts… but I’m still glad I got the initial injections.”

And what exactly do they want this time?

They’re baaaaack.

After a long quiet stretch, media and Twitter Covid scaremongering is on the rise.

The noise raises two questions. Is anything actually happening? And, if not, why all the shrieking?

The first question is easier to answer: No. Nothing is happening.

Cases and hospitalizations have risen slightly this summer, but Omicron remains very mild. Many if not most Covid-reported hospitalizations are incidental, and most Covid deaths are incidental or end-of-life. Without Covid or mRNA boosters to juice them, all-cause deaths are at normal levels in the United States and Europe.

Of course, Sars-Cov-2 continues to mutate, like all viruses. Theoretically, it could change in a way that increases its dangers.

But despite the caterwauling about new strains, viruses generally become more transmissible and less virulent. Sars-Cov-2 has been no exception. Since Omicron displaced Delta globally in December 2021, none of its subvariants have shown signs of reversing that trend.

Early in 2020, shocked citizens and social scientists predicted the widespread imposition of extreme “non-pharmaceutical interventions” in response to COVID would prove to have horrible and costly human and economic trade-offs — turns out they were right.

In early 2020, when authorities in China implemented — overnight — a draconian “lockdown” of 100 million citizens in response to reports of a new virus, the rest of the world little suspected that in short order, the same unprecedented home incarceration policy, along with a host of other “non-pharmaceutical interventions” (NPIs) would be coming soon to a locality near them.

Never before have so-called NPIs — which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also euphemistically refers to as “community mitigation strategies” — so aggressively taken center stage during a declared disease outbreak.

In the U.S., the five most adopted state-level COVID NPIs have been state-of-emergency orders, bans or limits on social gatherings, school closures, business restrictions (notably, restaurants) and stay-at-home orders.

Once upon a time in a prosperous land, a rumor swept across the kingdom that there was an invisible vapor floating through the air. Many vapors had come before, but this one was so extraordinary, it called for an extraordinary response.

This vapor, the town criers cried, could kill you at any time, anywhere. You could get it by talking, breathing, or singing. You could get it by standing or walking too closely to someone. You could even get it by playing. And the scariest thing of all—you could get it and not even know you had it.

The only way to escape was to hide indoors, keep away from people, and rub your hands with a clear jelly every time you touched something. Merchants stopped trading, apprentices stopped learning, and people stopped seeing people.
