LA Times Op-Ed: Expect a Military Coup if Trump Wins Presidency

Via Truth Revolt

The failed coup attempt recently witnessed in Turkey isn’t “some exotic foreign news story,” writes James Kirchick for the LA Times, but a real possibility for America if Donald Trump wins the presidency.

Calling Trump “the most brazenly authoritarian figure to secure the nomination of a major American political party,” Kirchick lays out why he feels a President Trump could become the first ever to fire a general for refusing to drop bombs:

Throughout the campaign, Trump has repeatedly bragged about ordering soldiers to commit war crimes, and has dismissed the possibility that he would face any resistance. “They won’t refuse,” he told Fox News’ Bret Baier earlier this year. “They’re not gonna refuse me. Believe me.” When Baier insisted that such orders are “illegal,” Trump replied, “I’m a leader. I’ve always been a leader. I’ve never had any problem leading people. If I say do it, they’re going to do it.”

Kirchick added that such “blimpish swagger” may work for Trump, Inc. but doesn’t in a “liberal democracy.”

The writer poses the following scenario: What if Trump ordered the military “to do something stupid, illegal or irrational,” that puts the lives and security of Americans at stake? What happens if he doesn’t listen to his military advisors telling him to back down?

Trump Accused Of “Apocalyptic” Fearmongering In Speech Promising “Security And Prosperity”

Tyler Durden's picture

In one of the most dramatic, polarizing, not to mention longest ever (at 75 minutes, it was the longest since 1972), convention speeches, Donald Trump claimed the Republican presidential nomination with a highly charged text in which he promised to be “the voice” of disenfranchised Americans and the guardian of “law and order” as president.

“Friends, delegates and fellow Americans, I humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States,” Trump said to raucous chants of “USA, USA, USA” from the delegates in the Quicken Loans arena in Cleveland.

Our plan will put America First. Americanism, not globalism, will be our credo,” Trump repeated on Thursday. “The American People will come first once again. My plan will begin with safety at home, which means safe neighborhoods, secure borders and protection from terrorism. There can be no prosperity without law and order.”

“Every day I wake up determined to deliver a better life for the people all across this nation that have been ignored, neglected and abandoned,” Trump said in a prime-time speech that lasted for more than an hour. “These are the forgotten men and women of our country. People who work hard but no longer have a voice. I am your voice.”

TRUMPED! A NATION ON THE BRINK OF RUIN…..AND HOW TO BRING IT BACK

Excerpt from his upcoming book.

Guest Post by David A. Stockman

………First there were seventeen. At length, there was one. And now there is even a chance he may become President.

Donald Trump’s wildly improbable capture of the GOP nomination and rise toward the White House is surely the most significant upheaval in American politics since Ronald Reagan.

Yet the rise of Trump—-and Bernie Sanders, too—-vastly transcends ordinary politics. In fact, it reaches deep into a ruined national economy that has morphed into rank casino capitalism under the misguided policies and faithless rule of the Washington/Wall Street elites.

This epic deformation has delivered historically unprecedented setbacks and resentments to the bottom 90% of American households. They have seen their real wealth and living standards steadily deteriorate for several decades now, even as vast financial windfalls have accrued to the elite few at the very top.

Fixing The Problem

Guest Post by Eric Peters

And yes, it is a problem.reforming cops lead

Whether you are a “law and order” type or otherwise. In fact, especially if you are a “law and order” type. Because, simply put, cops are not subject to the same law and order as the rest of us – and that is a problem.

For them as much as us.

For them, because it has created an arrogance – a recklessness – that encourages the extra-legal excesses that we’re seeing on video almost every day (these videos probably capturing only a small slice of what actually goes on every day).

For us, because we are increasingly threatened by these excesses.

It is worrisome and very dangerous – for everyone.

Ted Cruz and the Trump Takeover

Guest Post by Patrick J. Buchanan

Ted Cruz and the Trump Takeover

The self-righteousness and smugness of Ted Cruz in refusing to endorse Donald Trump, then walking off stage in Cleveland, smirking amidst the boos, takes the mind back in time.

At the Cow Palace in San Francisco in July of 1964, Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, having been defeated by Barry Goldwater, took the podium to introduce a platform plank denouncing “extremism.”

Implication: Goldwater’s campaign is saturated with extremists.

Purpose: Advertise Rocky’s superior morality.

Smug and self-righteous, Rocky brayed at the curses and insults, “It’s a free country, ladies and gentlemen.”

Rocky was finished. He would never win the nomination.

Richard Nixon took another road, endorsed Goldwater, spoke for him in San Francisco, campaigned for him across America. And in 1968, with Goldwater’s backing, Nixon would rout Govs. George Romney and Rockefeller, and win the presidency, twice.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The soul is dyed with the color of its thoughts. Think only on those things that are consistent with your principles and can bear the light of day. Your character is your choice. Day by day, what you do is who you become. Your integrity is your destiny – it is the light that guides your way.”

Republican Convention: FINAL DAY

I’ve given some thought to how I would advise Trump today.  Two words:  Be  Likeable.

Most Americans are too goddamned stoopid, or have much much too short of an attention span to be bothered with policy details. And you know what the Greatest Sin is in America these days?  Being boring.

If at the end of the speech people’s take away is “Hey, he ain’t so bad. I like that guy.” — then Donald will have the election all sewn up.

Now, you might say, “Well, all Hillary needs to do is the same thing.”.  Sure, and the only thing keeping frogs from flying are a pair of wings. You see, Hillary CAN’T be likeable to a vast majority of Americans. There isn’t an ounce of femininity, softness, humor, beauty, gentleness, calmness, class, or graciousness about her. She is ugly, old, withered, and angry. There is no record of anyone ever meeting Hillary and walking away saying, “Hey, I like her!”. None. Trust me on that.

So, Donald be like this guy!!  You know the REAL reason why so many people liked Ronald Reagan?  Because he was likeable!

Anyway, post your Day 4 thoughts here.

Global Warming Expedition Stopped In Its Tracks By Arctic Sea Ice

A group of adventurers, sailors, pilots and climate scientists that recently started a journey around the North Pole in an effort to show the lack of ice, has been blocked from further travels by ice.

The Polar Ocean Challenge is taking a two month journey that will see them go from Bristol, Alaska, to Norway, then to Russia through the North East passage, back to Alaska through the North West passage, to Greenland and then ultimately back to Bristol. Their objective, as laid out by their website, was to demonstrate “that the Arctic sea ice coverage shrinks back so far now in the summer months that sea that was permanently locked up now can allow passage through.”

There has been one small hiccup thus-far though: they are currently stuck in Murmansk, Russia because there is too much ice blocking the North East passage the team said didn’t exist in summer months, according to Real Climate Science.

How to Escape the World’s Biggest Ponzi Scheme

How to Escape the World’s Biggest Ponzi Scheme

By Justin Spittler

It’s the top story in the investment world right now…

As we showed you yesterday, the S&P 500 just hit a new all-time high, topping 2,130 for the first time since May 2015.

But it’s not just stocks that are ripping higher.

Bonds have quietly broken out to new all-time highs as well.

Remember, a bond’s price rises when its yield falls. On Friday, the yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury hit an all-time low of 1.37%. Yields on British (0.7%), German (-0.2%), and Japanese (-1.1%) 10-year bonds have also hit record lows over the past week.

With rates this low, bondholders are barely earning any interest income. In Europe and Japan, investors are actually paying to lend the government money. That’s because negative interest rates have taken over these economies.

In today’s issue, we explain how negative rates have turned the bond market into a giant Ponzi scheme. And we’ll show you the best way to escape it…

• Negative rates basically flip a bond upside down…

Typically, you earn interest when you own a bond. With negative rates, you pay interest.

JFK Turned to Peace and Was Assassinated

Guest Post by Paul Craig Roberts

Researchers who have investigated the assassination of President John F. Kennedy for 30 or more years have concluded that he was murdered by a conspiracy of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the CIA, and the Secret Service. See for example, JFK And The Unspeakable by James W. Douglass. Shortly before he was murdered, President John F. Kennedy gave an extraordinary speech at American University. In the speech he came out against continuation of the Cold War that risked all life on earth for the benefit of the profits of the military-security complex and the budgets and power of the Pentagon and CIA.

President Kennedy was already marked for assassination. He rejected the Joint Chiefs’ belligerence toward the Soviet Union and their belief that nuclear war could be won. He rejected Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lemnitzer’s “Operation Northwoods,” a plan to carry out false flag terror attacks on Americans and blame Castro in order to create support for a US invasion of Cuba. He rejected US Air Force support for the CIA’s Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. He worked outside of channels with Khrushchev to defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis. The paranoid anti-communists who controlled US military and security forces concluded that President Kennedy did not serve their career interests and was soft on communism and thereby unable to stand up to the Soviet Union. They viewed Kennedy as a threat to US national security that needed to be removed.

The Big Picture Hasn’t Changed: Don’t Get Sucked Back Into the Stock Market

The Big Picture Hasn’t Changed: Don’t Get Sucked Back Into the Stock Market

By Justin Spittler

Stocks are on a tear right now…

Today, the S&P 500 hit a new all-time high. It topped 2,130 for the first time since May 2015. The benchmark index is now up 6.9% over the past two weeks.

All good, right?

It might seem that way…if we were only analyzing U.S. stocks.

The thing is, in nearly every other market, stocks are still headed lower:

  • The Japanese Nikkei 225 is down 15% this year. It’s down 28% since last June.
  • The STOXX Europe 600, which tracks 600 large European stocks, is down 9% this year. It’s fallen 20% since April 2015.
  • The FTSE 100, Great Britain’s version of the S&P 500, is down 6% since last April.

And that’s not all. If you’ve been reading the Dispatch, you know the global economy is not in good shape. Corporate earnings are falling. Stocks are expensive. GDP growth is stalling.

So why are U.S. stocks making new highs?

Today, we take a look at the big picture to help you make sense of the market’s mixed signals. As you’ll see, right now is a dangerous time to get back into stocks…

• First the good news…
