Dictatorship in Disguise: Authoritarian Monsters Wreak Havoc on Our Freedoms

Guest Post by John W. Whitehead

“You see them on the street. You watch them on TV. You might even vote for one this fall. You think they’re people just like you. You’re wrong. Dead wrong.” — They Live

We’re living in two worlds.

There’s the world we see (or are made to see) and then there’s the one we sense (and occasionally catch a glimpse of), the latter of which is a far cry from the propaganda-driven reality manufactured by the government and its corporate sponsors, including the media.

Indeed, what most Americans perceive as life in America—privileged, progressive and free—is a far cry from reality, where economic inequality is growing, real agendas and real power are buried beneath layers of Orwellian doublespeak and corporate obfuscation, and “freedom,” such that it is, is meted out in small, legalistic doses by militarized police and federal agents armed to the teeth.

All is not as it seems.

Monsters with human faces walk among us. Many of them work for the U.S. government.

This is the premise of John Carpenter’s film They Live, which was released in November 1988 and remains unnervingly, chillingly appropriate for our modern age.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY – Australian rock gods AC/DC earn their first Top 40 hit with “You Shook Me All Night Long” – 1980

Via History.com

On October 25, 1980, AC/DC earn their first pop Top 40 hit with “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

Back when they were releasing albums like Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1977), AC/DC would have seemed an unlikely candidate to become one of the top-selling pop-music acts of all time. But over the course of the coming decades, that’s exactly what these Australian rock gods became, and not by keeping pace with changes in musical fashion, but by sticking steadfastly to a musical style and business strategy that have helped the group stand the test of time.

With a hard and loud sound now recognized as influencing nearly all heavy metal music that followed, AC/DC quickly earned a loyal following among hard-rock audiences in the mid-to-late 1970s, but it was “You Shook Me All Night Long” that first gave a hint of their mainstream appeal. “You Shook Me All Night Long” was the lead single from what would prove to be AC/DC’s biggest-ever album, Back In Black (1980). Their previous release, Highway To Hell (1979) had been the first by the group to land on the U.S. album charts, but the group’s planned follow-up was put in jeopardy by the March 1980 death of lead singer Bon Scott, who choked on his own vomit during a bout of heavy drinking. With new singer Brian Johnson put in place just two months later, the group formed in the early 1970s by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young recorded Back In Black in the summer of 1980. The album would spend a solid year on the U.S. album charts, spawning a second Top 40 hit in the form of its title track and a sports-stadium anthem in the form of “Hells Bells” and ultimately selling more than 20 million copies worldwide.

AC/DC would never have another single as popular as “You Shook Me All Night Long,” but the group’s ongoing ability to sell full-length rock albums—even in an era when digital downloads have decimated album sales across all genres— is utterly without parallel. The group’s commercial success has been credited, in part, to their refusal to allow their song catalog to be cannibalized and repackaged into compilation albums..

Feminism: The God That Failed

Submitted by Mary Christine

One of my favorite subjects. Should the 19th amendment be repealed and why? What if it had never been adopted?

Wilder, Wealthy and Wise

“Now, I know you’re a feminist, and I think that’s adorable, but this is grown-up time and I’m the man.” – Family Guy

My friend was a manager and hired a woman.  He told her that her first job was to make him a sandwich.  She quit.  Subway® is so sexist! (FYI, most memes today are, “as-found”)

Feminism.  It sounds so, well, reasonable from the start.  “Women just want equal rights.”  Sure, it sounds reasonable until you recall that the rise of feminism was the rise of the temperance movement, which made having a beer after work, umm, complicated.  But it was women who were at the lead of that absolute failure, too.

The ‘War of Terror’ may be about to hit Europe

Never underestimate a wounded and decaying Empire collapsing in real time.

Imperial functionaries, even in a “diplomatic” capacity, continue to brazenly declare that their exceptionalist control over the world is mandatory.

If that’s not the case, competitors may emerge and steal the limelight – monopolized by US oligarchies. That, of course, is absolute anathema.

Preserving Thousands of Years of Human Progress or Forcing the Donbas to Stay in Ukraine?

Guest Post by Spaceworm

The incredibly difficult question faced by Neocons and Democrats in congress today…

This past Saturday, I went for a hike with my girlfriend of 2 years. We saw the changing leaves of the Northeast, watched a gorgeous sunset, listened to a Mises Institute podcast in the car on the idiocy of Ben Bernanke winning a Nobel prize, ordered food to our apartment while still on the road, and now are settling down to watch There Will Be Blood with Daniel Day-Lewis (an incredible movie).

Photo from the hike. Near Bear Mountain New Jersey.

After this pleasant day, a thought occurred:

There has never been a time in human history when such an abundance of pleasures have been on-demand to people of nearly all income brackets. The wealthiest kings throughout history couldn’t have imagined the seemingly simple activities many take for granted today.

Sanity checks

Guest Post by Steve Kirsch

People tell me I’m crazy for believing the COVID vaccines are unsafe. But my list of sanity checks is objective evidence that I’m not the one who is crazy.

Better e-learning – Day 5: Sanity check! | Good To Great

Executive summary

People tell me I’m crazy all the time for believing that the COVID vaccines are unsafe.

But all I am doing is making the obvious conclusions from all the data in plain sight, including people’s reactions when challenged.

For example, at dinner last night, I revealed that my occupation was a “myth buster” and then people asked “what myth?” and I said that the vaccines were unsafe. Later, one of the attendees told me I should be ashamed of myself for spreading misinformation. I asked, “Do you have any data to back that up?” She said, “I don’t want to talk to you.”

Does that sound familiar?

Here’s a short checklist of observations that would be very hard to explain if the vaccines are safe and effective.

Berlusconi and Putin

Guest Post by Martin Armstrong

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has close ties to Vladimir Putin. Berlusconi, leader of the Forza Italia party, now serves as a junior partner under new PM Giorgia Meloni. Meloni fiercely supports Ukraine, but leaked audio indicates where Berlusconi stands.

“I can’t personally give my opinion because if it is told to the press it will turn out to be a disaster, but I am very, very, very worried. I rekindled relations with President Putin, a little bit. I knew him as a peaceful and sensible person,” the former PM said in a leaked audio recording. He also said in the recording that Russian ministers believe they are at war with the West because of the funding to Ukraine.

Political ‘Justice’ in America

Guest Post by Ron Paul

Josef Stalin’s top henchman famously said, “show me the man and I’ll show you the crime.” What it meant was that Soviet justice was about politics, not the rule of law. First decide who, for political reasons, is to be punished, and then the state will provide the crimes for which he will be charged.

This dark era of politicized “justice” has returned with former Trump campaign advisor Steve Bannon’s recent sentence to four months in jail for “contempt of Congress” over his refusal to appear before the House January 6th Committee.

How is it politicized justice for Bannon to be punished for ignoring a subpoena from the US Congress? Because many before him have been charged with contempt of Congress – including Democratic Party luminaries such as Eric Holder, Janet Reno, and Lois Lerner – and were never sentenced to jail time.

Here Comes the Democrat Rout

Guest Post by Kurt Schlichter

Students of military history understand that the real bloodletting starts when the losing side breaks ranks after its formations disintegrate and the cavalry sweeps in to mow down the fleeing survivors. It’s every man for himself, and the best the defeated individuals who were once part of cohesive units can hope for is not to end up one of the bodies left strewn across the battlefield. This is when the victor runs up the score. This is when the vast majority of casualties happen. This is a rout. And that’s pretty much where the Democrats are headed on November 8th, figuratively of course.

For the stupid people, we Republicans are the cavalry. For the really stupid people, cavalry is a highly-mobile fighting force, in ancient times mounted on horseback wielding lances, sabers, and sometimes bows or carbines. In the US Army, cavalrymen have given up their steeds but still wear bitchin’ headgear.
