In mid-June of last year, left-wing activist James Hodgkinson shot and wounded four Congressmen at baseball practice, including House majority whip Scalise who was in imminent risk of death. Aside from the cable news networks who said they “brought it on themselves,” there was condemnation on all sides.

In the year that’s passed, the sentiment and inclination of Hodgkinson has been reconsidered and tacitly embraced by the Left. They’ve adopted the Antifa idea that opposing Progressives equals White Supremacist Nazi Racism and, to quote them, “it’s okay to punch a Nazi”.

Having seen the ongoing assaults on prominent Republicans in public places and at their homes, directly and specifically encouraged by the Democratic Party leadership, who believes they would condemn Hodgkinson-like assassinations today? Once loosed, such violence would expand beyond the ability of law enforcement to contain it.

Francis Porretto put it succinctly: “The storm clouds have breasted the horizon and they’re moving our way fast”. We’ve been here before, the reign of terror in the 1970s with thousands of bombings, targeted criminal assaults, serial urban arson on a large scale and many unpunished murders.

PARIS – We spend a lot of time overseas – mostly in Europe and South America.

This is both good and bad.

On the good side, the distance helps give us more – or fresh – perspective. We see how others live. We get to watch events on the global stage… while keeping an eye on the circus in America, too.

But we risk getting… “out of touch.”

Yesterday, we caught up.

“I spent much of my life in Louisiana,” began a financial analyst we met in Paris. “People there have a very different way of looking at things.”

Our friend was about to explain why he thought America would crack apart in the years ahead.

Everyone is talking about a looming civil war on American soil, but they’re all blaming the “other” side. The media is deliberately trying to stir things up with breathless headlines about how awful the “other” side is. And it’s working so well it could lead us right to Civil War 2.0.

The fact is, both the Left and the Right are to blame, threatening those who don’t have the same worldview. What it’s essential for us to keep in mind is that these are the opinions of the extremes of both sides. We in America have had conservative and liberal points of view along with everything in between for decades without the constant, looming threat of violence.

Most voters fear that political violence is coming from opponents of the president’s policies, just as they did in the second year of Barack Obama’s presidency, and nearly one-in-three think a civil war is next.

Thirty-one percent (31%) of Likely U.S. Voters say it’s likely that the United States will experience a second civil war sometime in the next five years, with 11% who say it’s Very Likely. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 59% consider a second civil war unlikely, but that includes only 29% who say it’s Not At All Likely. I was interviewed by a mainstream media reporter yesterday. I thought he wanted to talk tech issues, but we actually spent almost the entire conversation discussing the feeling that many conservatives have that America has gone off the tracks and is headed toward dissolution or alternately, a civil war one day. Obviously, this would be a terrible thing and ironically, twenty years ago, it would have been laughable. Today, the joke isn’t so funny because we are a deeply unhealthy society with a dysfunctional government and for all our money, success and storied history, we seem to be on an increasingly dangerous trajectory.
