Comedian Dave Chappelle was tackled on stage Tuesday by a man who was reportedly armed with a gun and a knife. Chappelle was not harmed during the incident and later joked that it āwas a trans manā who rushed the stage.
Chappelle was performing at theĀ Netflix Is A JokeĀ festival in Los Angeles at The Hollywood Bowl when a clearly deranged person managed to lunge into him.

For purposes of full disclosure I have never worked with Dave Chappelle and though we were both signed with the same agency at the same time we rarely crossed paths on the road. We’d worked showcase clubs in NYC but I’ll admit that I was never impressed with his lackadaisical comedy stylings and his reputation for being a no-show or showing up late and pissing off the crowd only to walk off early. I considered his behavior bad form and his brand of humor lazy so I never paid much attention as his star rose, never watched his show or any of his subsequent work after that.

These days Iām prone to measure my support for something, not in terms of whether or not I personally like or support it, but rather, Iām almost always drawn to anything todayās popular culture tells me Iām supposed to hate.Ā Therefore, this week Iām cheering comedian Dave Chappelleās new Netflix standup special āSticks and Stones.ā
Full disclosure: I havenāt even watched it yet .I promise I will and I hope you will too.Ā Not because weāre going to agree with everything Chappelle says.Ā Itās precisely because we donāt HAVE to agree with everything he says.Ā More to the point, thatās exactly what heās celebrating. āOffensiveā is in the eye of the scolder.Ā Comedy ā if done well -ā isnāt something to be consumed and enjoyed in lockstep.
